Thread: Rustoleum red close to flame red

Default Rustoleum red close to flame red

I was playing around with some old paint cans I had today and discovered that rustoleum regal red #7765 is a very close match for PR-4 flame red. The top of my passenger door is peeling so I am going to do that with the rustoleum and that will really show how close it matches. With the dupli-color running close to $8.00 for an 8oz. spray can I hope this 12oz. can of gloss enamel does the trick for under $5.00.

Adobe Dave uses something rattle can that he found as a near perfect match. I'm sure he will share his secret.

I don't remember exactly what Dave recommends either, but whatever it was I used it to do my engine bay and it's a really close match. I used a white primer though, which in retrospect I wish I used a red primer because some rock and dust chips fly through my hood scoop and smash on my firewall making it look not-so-pretty, again. I need to redo-it.. and plug my scoop hole.

Yeah, I use a light gray primer, it's very hard to get coverage with red when using a spray can unless you start with a very light primer.

Played around with the paint can this weekend and did a lower part on my tailgate. This regal red is really really close. I would be curious to see if this is the color Adobe uses as well. Cherry red has too much orange in it but could pass on out of the way spots like the inside of the bed.

That's what I use, and it is a perfect match.

I've done some painting on my R/T and my flame red intrepid recently and I have been really happy with the results using the rust-oleum. The duplicolor is great and I have used it many times but it just doesn't cover like the rust-oleum enamel. And it's twice the price as well and you have to use twice as much to get good coverage. I did the top of a fender where the clear had completely failed and it only took me 20 minutes to prep and paint and it looks great. I didn't have to bother with primer, just sanded it real good, wiped it down and sprayed and hoped that the wind didn't kick up.

Yeah, I knew someone would ask that. I suck on the computer but let me see if I can get my 14 year old to help me post some pics. I think you will be impressed with the pictures.

I was never impressed with the coverage of the duplicolor as well. Plus the price is too high as well.

Yes, sunrise red is very close and some Walmarts sell it in the larger 25% free cans that are 15oz and only $3.77 a can. It's tax free weekend in MA so I just loaded up on regal red and sunrise red for some projects I have coming up.

This is the hood after I prepped it and was ready to paint. With rustoleum I got complete coverage with only two coats. It would be almost impossible with dupli-color unless you primed the whole hood first and it would still take more than a can to get the right coverage.

Sorry Steve, I probably wouldn't have bought the truck in the first place if it weren't for the hood. I always intended to keep it because the reflexions hood has always been one of my favorites.
Does anyone know if any other manufacturer made a steel hood for the Dakota?
