Thread: Autocross Setup!

  1. #1

    Talking Autocross Setup!

I'm planning on entering the R/T in some autocross events this year. Currently under the knife getting a new suspension. Any suggestions on wheels size and tire recommendations? I know the brakes need upgraded bad. What is the best brake upgrade without having to rob a bank?

No offense, but watching your videos, you'd have better control with both hands on the wheel all the time, and leaving it in one gear, that is unless you only have one arm, and then I overly apologize.

yea i know i have a bad habbit of keeping a hand on the shifter, ive admitited it multuple times. im putting the amg paddle shift kit in the car this spring to help me remember to race with 2 hands.

i use first gear too much to just use one gear, i have to steer with the rear wheels a lot in a car this heavy. it pushes a bit and that means i need the torque of first often to rotate the car. there is always room for improvement, but looking at all the cars i beat and the 2 second place trophys i took home last year i do ok. both times out the only pony car that beat me was a camaro with no interior on hoosier slicks. im happy with my performance i just need to make the car better. i just put 315's under the rear thursday and ordered stack performance chubby sway bars today. the sway bars should get rid of the front end push also.

Looks like you were just cruising around like driving a limo around in an empty parking lot in the first video...haha.

Great! You'd turn those two 2nd Place Trophy's into 1st. Give it a try next time. Back in the daywhen I was autocrossing a Merkur XR4Ti in BSP it helped a lot. Moved that experience to a race track with an RX7.

Slicks and no interior in the same class as you? Yikes!!!

Hey as long as you're having fun, and taking it somewhere that the only thing you'll hit are cones, keep up with it. Try it without a passenger as well, less weight.

Nice videos! I havent taken it to an autocross event yet, but looking to get my feet wet with the new suspension. Decent tires on 17" R/Ts gonna be ok? Racing tires on lightweight wheels Im sure would be ideal. What about brake setups?

Driver mod. Any 17" summer tire will do fine until you get a lot more experience with the platform under your belt.

Don't bother upgrading the brakes yet, you shouldn't be using them too much

On my set-up I run Hawk HP+ on the front and Porterfield R4-S on the back. You don't want to go to aggressive with your pads on street tire because you will be locking them up to much. The most important thing to learn is drive like there is a egg under the gas pedal. If you are spinning the tires you are losing time. Its all about being smooth.

Are there real tracks that people can race street cars on, some association or something? Not drag race of course, but twists and turns, ups and downs.
The Dakota RT is gone... but not forgotten.

There's a lot of track around the country that does it, theres a track here in Oklahoma that does high speed touring were you can take streetcars out. I got to go out in a fully prepped Mustang and it was the funnest thing I have ever done in a car..and that includes sex because it lasted longer.

Just to give you the idea here is the website for our local track,

when you get them... put the rear on the tightest setting possible, and the front on the loosest or second-loosest setting possible... that will help promote oversteer... the ideal way is to have a bigger rear sway but since thats not an option but they are adjustable you can just tighten up the rear and it will help with that problem...

I would say SSBC rotors/pads and an SSBC rear disc brake kit would be the best bang for the buck brake kit, but the viper brake swap is still better... unfortunately the status on that kit is up in the air as the company that made them closed up... but someone else bought the plans for the kit and well see what happens next...

as for wheels and tires... that is all about your wallet... you can get cheap aftermarket 17s or use R/T wheels but go with the tire recommendations from Jon in the second post in this thread... he knows whats up with tires...

what did you do for suspension mods?

How does that look for everyone for a road track. That is road america in wis. I have not taken the truck there, but I have ran that track on my old 900rr crotch rocket, and I did run it in my supra.... Its a great time if you have enough people to rent the track out for the day. A local motorcycle club I was with rented it for 115 per person for the day I believe it was and we had a blast. We had about 15-20 people there that day. If there are enough people interested in going there it may be a good place to hold a midwest event for all mopar to road race. Similar to how people do the road racing in vegas during Supra Nationals. (vipers, supra's, vette's and anyone else wanting to play all come to road race for a day. Fun beating on vipers with an I6 on a track.) Personally I think each person has to design their own setup suspension wise to suit their own driving style. Some people like sway bars to stiffen the body roll, some people use their suspension (shocks/struts) to hold better, and some people like to slide and eat up tires. LOL Its just a driving style thing IMO. What works for one may not work for others.

    http://www.blackhawkfarms.com/content/homepage.cfm

There is also blackhawk Farms too. This is a smaller track than road america, and a bit cheaper. But both of these tracks are within an hour of me. So im sure that many people have some close to them they may not even know about.

Paying someone to build your truck is the same as paying someone to have sex with your wife, and then bragging about it when she is pregnant....

i run blackhawk farms high speed autocross, but im not too fond of that track. i don't know if ill go back out to that one again this year.

i love Autobahn in Joliet, I ran that track twice last year.

i also ran gingerman raceway in michigan. gingerman is a great starter track cause there are no walls to run into if you go off track. if you guys want to rent any track to get your feet wet you might want to start there.
