Thread: Rearend gear lube 75W-90 or 75W-140

    Default Rearend gear lube 75W-90 or 75W-140

    I assume that different year Dakotas spec out different weight reared gear lube. My 2001 manual on page 213 say all Dodge Truck axles contain fuel efficient SAE 75W-90 Multipurpose Type GL-5 gear Lubricant. On page 214 it does say you have to use friction additive if it has a limited slip. 75W-90 or 75W-140 does it really matter?

    Depends on temp. , winter, lighter weight. The heavy weight lube doesn't lube clutches as well.
    Heavy trucks like the 2500 diesel dodge want. the 75/140 because of heat build up towing in heavy truck...Although i run the lighter weight lube [2 bottles additive] in all Posi diffs. Lube the clutches better...My 2 cents..

    I'll be using 75W-90 and two bottles of limit slip additive when I put my new B&M cover on this week. Just wanted to see if there was a reason to go 75W-140. I'm in VA, doesn't get that cold and I drive easy until all my temps are up.

    There is a company in Scottsdale Az , called TA performance that makes a really good cover for our 9.25 differentials.     Sorry guys haven’t posted images in a long time .but check out their covers on their website. In house machining. They build 1,000 N/A Buick engines.

    Typically it should take 80/90 with limited slip additive, I did mine with 75/140 royal purple and some additive which technically I didn’t need cause I have a locker, I can’t remember if I have an LPW cover or a TA cover on mine

    I like that cover, but the B&M cover I ordered is due in today.

    I used 75/140 fluid with Spicer additive and clutches. Worst spelling stuff ever.
    Like the B&M cover , time was my excision also. Picked up cover and main cap studs
    At lunch time.
