Exclamation Distributor knock? Engine running rough. and knocking.

hello, i own a 1999 dodge dakota r/t. which developed a knock and spun a bearing. brand new engine in. all done correctly. and its running really rough? there is a knocking that sounds like the distributor. but we replaced it and it did not help. the truck coughs when you try to give it gas. misfiring. its a knock. but it cannot be the new engine! could it be a sensor? before we pulled the old motor. it threw knock sensor codes. but its not throwing ANY now. help!

Did you set the fuel sync?

As stated above, the fuel sync needs to be set by either the dealer or someone with an appropriate Snap-On scanner. Basically, the distributor no longer controls timing on these trucks, but it does send important cam position information to the computer. If the PCM doesn't see the distributor in one very specific location (needs to be dead nuts on 0) then it will run terribly.

No doubt these guys know what they are talking about. However back when I was previously active, we did lots of intake and head swaps and don't recall setting the fuel sync. They do say memory is the first thing to go, but first thing you should check to .make sure the distributor installed correctly then double and triple check you have the wires in the right order.

If you'd marked the distributor and put it back to where you pulled it out then you wouldn't have had to set the fuel sync, but if someone doesn't do that and it's off a little is when things go wonky.

Removing/re-installing intake and heads don't require removal of distributor. That's probably why you don't remember it. LOL
