General consensus is that shorty headers flow no better than the stock manifolds.

I'm not a member of that consensus. My experience of using both demonstrated to me that the shorties did in fact show seat of the pants improvement at just about every rpm range.

I went catless at the same time, but I like to think I felt a very minor improvement across the board when I did the shorties (again on a 4.7).
Plus those shiny octopus arms look good under the hood!

I am not in a position where I am in need of new headers, as my 21 year old Edelbrocks still appear to be in great shape. This discussion got me to thinking 'what will I do when mine finally give out'.
Makes me consider buying a new set and storing away for the day.

One good thing about the Eddies is that even as shorties, they tried to equalize primary lengths.

According to David Vizard, equal length primary is not as important as the length of the secondary, since most of us all run exhaust, and at our power level who cares? If it fits, send it.

This was when you went to the track and uncapped headers. We found lengthening the collector did in fact give a bit more torque. Equal length primaries scavenged exhaust gases out more efficiently but this was at high rpms and for race applications..
As you say, who gives a rats ass about any of this on the street.
1 and 3/4" tubes ...3" exhaust and it will be almost like uncapped headers.

I'd like to see dyno results that prove that.
