I assume the u-joints are factory original. Does not seem to have the typical snap rings I have seen on previous vehicles. Any help on removal is appreciated. Link to u-joint pics are below.

Those are "inner side" snap rings. Check this out

Thanks Big Rob. Great site for explanation. The last u joints I changed were years ago on an 81 camaro and they had outer snap rings. It obvious now there are many types.
Thanks again.

From my research (I also have a 99 R/T), the part numbers I found for Spicer Life Series are 5-7437X rear and 5-1330X front.
I haven't confirmed this on my truck yet but from what I've seen from others for only the 99 year (oddball), the joint at the rear should have one set of internal rings and one set of external rings. The joint at the front should be all external. For some reason, if you look it up at Autozone or the similar for a 99 Dakota they're going to give you the wrong parts. Ask for a 99 Ram 5.9 9.25" axle instead.
Yet here you are, with a joint that clearly has all 4 inner snap rings I just looked up a 98 Dakota on Dana's site and found a 5-811X that has all internals, try that one. Yours could be a 99 with some leftover 98 parts.

Justin,
Thanks for the details I appreciate it. It probably does have some left over parts from the 98. I will have to check the build date. More than likely it was probably built in 98.
Thanks for the help.

Long story short, the spicers did not work.

Front did not have internal snap rings and rear fit the driveshaft fine with internal snap rings; however the diameter of the u joint when connected to the diff was 1/8" smaller in diameter. After torquing the u joint straps, the driveshaft flopped around. Definitely smaller in diameter compared to the old ones.
Went to Pepboys and they had a set that worked front and rear. Checked my build date on the RT and its 10/98. Not sure if my truck is put together as a bastard of different year parts, but in the end, I can change u joints fairly easy now.
Hardest part is getting under the truck. Not as young and in shape as I once was.

Also found this connecter hanging off the side of the trans. Did not see any place it would connect to.
