Default Blown engine? What is the best option from here?

Greeting. Long time lurker, first post.

My Truck is a 99 Club Cab. Really clean, good shape, ran strong(72k miles), owned it for about 6 years, I take really good care of it. I let my step son borrow it and he brought it back and there is a puddle under the front of the engine (coolant). I ask him WTF... he swears he did nothing (I let him live (probably the wrong choice)). I am fairly handy, I buy all the parts, and go to work. I get it back together with no problem. First start attempt has it making some really odd noises. Sounds like liquid, metal noises and I know there is big trouble. I call a local shop that I trust to take a look at it. He says it sounds like a timing chain. He gets it changed, and still nothing. He says as soon as you try to start it, it jumps out of time. He believes that there has been something catastrophic done to the internals (specifically he said the crank). He recommends replacing it with a new motor "long block" from O'Reilly for $2500. I have looked online and found a couple engines on eBay that I may consider. One is a 42k mile "Z code" but it's from a Dodge Van. Will that work? I like the 42k miles part. Price is reasonable too.. My guy is warning me away from this.

This is all way beyond what I have the tools or talent for at this point. I'd like to hear from the group here about your opinions if there is a different direction I should consider. Thanks!

The 5.9L is the same in everything minus some minor things like alternator wiring depending on year, etc but that can be fixed by using your existing wiring and accessories if you run into something that's different. Throw a junk yard engine in it and go is the cheapest option. Throw a timing chain, water pump, and aluminum belly pan gasket it you want to do some maintenance while you're in there. $2,500 is a lot for a stock engine. The engine I'm selling with forged internals, R/T heads, and a custom cam I'm not asking a ton more than that lol.

Stay away from the auto part store "long block".
The things are remanufactured by blind dyslexic preschoolers.

I honestly never thought about ordering a block lke that from a box store. jasper or blueprint wouldnt be bad options for the price.

    Jasper is OK.
O'Reilly's still uses ATK and they're a joke. Blueprint is good and Summit sells them. I wonder if they'll price match? May be worth a shot.

Any running 5.9L will work for you then, no need to spend 2500 for one lol

Find a different shop/mechanic that can diagnose and tell you what's wrong with your motor instead of guessing at what parts to replace, you've now have paid for timing gear that you may have not needed

Take look thru car-part.com for your area if you decide to go used. At least you would have a local yard you were dealing with. The engine may come with a short warranty where you could go back to them. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.
