    Default K&N Universal Plenum

During my long engine rebuild downtime, I thought I'd post what I am using for an "Air Hat" or plenum. I see others that are using the K&N Kit, but the hat it comes with is low and flat. This one and the set up came with the truck, and I have no complaints from the Original Owner's Install. Hood has no issues closing, even with the M1 2bbl. Thought this would be discontinued from K&N, but it is still available. I have not seen any other R/T use this. The piping looks Home Depot from the filter to the hat, and I just ordered a new K&N Air Filter (RE-0870)for this set-up, as the original is getting a little haggard looking.

    K&N Custom Plenum
Cast aluminum plenum, beautifully finished with black powder coating and natural aluminum highlights. The plenum is designed to fit most American 4 barrel carb that have a 5-1/8" flange. Also will fit the Weber DGV carburetor when used with K&N adapter 85-1061. Designed for cold air intake, plenum has a single snorkel outlet that can be fitted with a 4" I.D. hose running to a remote air filter. A K&N universal filter with a 4" flange can also be clamped directly on the snorkel as well. See the Universal pages for filters that will fit onto the inlet. The outside diameter of the plenum is 9" and the snorkel sticks out 6" from the center of the plenum. Minimum clearance required above the carburetor flange is 3-1/8". Customer must provide 1/4"-20 hold down stud.

Was there a complete kit available at one time, or did you fabricate what is in the pictures?

    EDIT...

I searched the internet, and came up with some postings about an Intense Performance CAI Kit that seemed to be available in the early 2000's for out engines. Is the filter inside that canister? Seems the heat from the engine bay would heat up that chrome pipe? 9t9-5.2's wrapping of the air box is another option.

Interesting how things have changed in this area in the past 20 years.

...also in my search for Intense Performance, I read that some were moving the air temp sensor from the intake manifold to the air inlet tubes. They state this would trick the computer to thinking the engine wasn't up to temperature, and allow it to run more richer-er. This seems to be what was done before places like Flyin' Ryan came around.

This link is 15 years old, and full of outdated links, but interesting reading.

Moving the air temp sensor reads temperatures closer to ambient temps instead of inside the heat soaked manifold.
The ECM would call for more fuel but the 20 or 30 degree difference is probably negligible.
However tuners like Ryan might actually recommend it. I'd be interested to hear Ryan's opinion.

IIRC, Ryan likes the IAT sensor in the manifold. He then compensates for that in the tune.

We tried all kinds of gimmicks to try to gain a little HP back in the beginning. There was a guy named Bernd that made an IAT adjuster with resistors and adjustable knob. It was supposed to make the sensor calibrations adjustable. I never had a tic of improvement at the track with it. We used to piggy-back a jet module on our Mopar perf pcm's also.

Thanks! It is something for me to do during it's winter hibernation.

I insulated the airbox and moved the air inlet behind the grill, and the IAT to the outlet of the box,

I remember reading post from Bernd on old forums. He was a little off the wall. Didn't he have a built up 3.9?

But some of those gimmicks actually worked. The TPS mod made a big difference in curing the off idle stumble on my old 2000 Dakota with the 3.9

I did this way back in the day, with SCT and tuners out now it really is a waste of time now.

I had one of the Intense Performance set-ups on my first truck. Filter is in the canister, it seals the section where the stock filter gets air in the fender cut-out, and the actual piping and canister are ceramic coated to prevent from heat soak.

Intense was a boat racer out of the Seattle area, the big tank was thin gage aluminum, I also had the IAT in the air Intake tube, than I actually bought a knob thing from bernd, oh the things we would do for hp, including adding a fish weight to the end of the pedal cable

For some reason these things would flatten out when you would drop the hammer, so you would have to let off a bit for it to pull, don’t know why, so we would put a fish weight or a butt connector on the end of the cable to pull the slack out of the cable
