Default ABS & Brake light on

My 99 R/T brake light and ABS lights came on the other day. I go thru the usual checks, brake fluid level, etc... I then go by my friends shop and use his scanner to pull codes but it doesn’t recognize the ABS computer. I check both ABS fuses, good! I recheck the codes with another scanner, same deal. It doesn’t recognize the ABS computer. It also doesn’t recognize the SRS computer either. I’m at a loss. How do I move forward without codes? Anybody come across anything like this before? Ideas, hints, suggestions,? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More than likely the rear speed sensor, very common issue on these trucks. Had to replace mine a couple weeks ago, Abs and brake light also on.

I thought about that. I knew they were a weak link, but most people complain about the speedo not working until 20 mph and I don’t have that problem. I really don’t want to start throwing parts at it if I can help it. I appreciate the help.

Nature of the beast. Happened to me too. About $25 and 2 beers to replace it.

Speedo isn't always affected. Mine wasn't.

After you replace it you may have to find someone with an ABS/SRS scanner to clear the codes, I did.

That’s part of the problem. I have a scanner that is ABS/SRS capable but it doesn’t recognize the computers. Does anybody know if there’s something different about these systems that won’t read on many scanners?

If the ABS module was completely dead it probably wouldn't read ABS but you said it wont read SRS either. One has nothing to do with the other as far as I know. Maybe try another scanner or take it to a good shop and have them check it out.

Unfortunately, you don’t always get codes when there is a problem. And sometimes when codes are present, they are a consequence of the of the actual root problem, and the root of the problem doesn’t always show a code. It is not a fool proof system.

For instance, my 2004 Dakota was showing codes for a transmission problem but not the actual problem. There was no initial code for a bad crank sensor but the bad crank sensor was causing transmission shift problems, and I got codes for transmission problems. Replacing the crank sensor fixed the transmission shift problems.

FWIW, my 1998 Dakota had a bad speed sensor that was causing problems with the speedo along with the idiot lights. However, I did not have a bad speed sensor code.

Thanks guys. I tend to over think a problem. No codes and not recognizing the computers threw me for a loop. I’ll replace the rear end sensor and go from there.

Be careful pulling the sensor out. They have a habit of breaking the tip off and the tip stays in the housing.

When I changed mine it broke off at the red o-ring and the tip stayed down in the housing. Luckly I was able to dig it out.
