How do people get away running straight pipes where there is no gas change from upper to rear o2 sensor?
It's OK, you gots to learn somehow. Searching and reading will help.

As NitroRam said, forget about the two downstream sensors. They are not important, leave them plugged into the harness and tie them up to the frame rails.
The two upstream (first in line on the down pipes) sensors are the important ones. With out those the ECM will be thinking WTF and be all like LMFAO and ROTFLMAO. Sorry, I can't speak 19 year old.

With the '98 truck, there's actually only one downstream O2 and three upstreams lol, one in each downpipe and one just before the cat.

Best reason to keep asking questions. It is usually the do-overs that end up costly.

Without the pre-cat O2(s) the PCM is going to see no sensors and light up like a Christmas tree and run like dogshit because it will just assume it's crazy lean and throw extra fuel at it.
So basically I'd have to get the pin out for the extra 02 sensor coming from the computer and mount another 02 sensor upstream on the side that doesn't have it in order for it to work unless I just get 5.2 pcm?

And what exactly would happen if I only left my single 02 sensor wired up and the other disconnected? Would that start the wtf moment with the computer still?

The '98 5.9L PCM wants all 3 upstream O2s or it freaks out. Get a 5.2L PCM, wire in the injector wires, and then you're done.

I'ld hate to add confusion to everything. But you can get by with no o2s plugged in. The ecm will default off of pre saved fuel tables. I ran mine like this for a little while and the afr was pretty damn close. But for the little extra work I would definitely get both pre cat o2s installed and wired. You'll get better fuel mileage and friendlier idle/ street manners.
