Default Magnum to LS1 T56 build thread

Might as well start a thread for this

    Small Block Magnum
    LS1 T56
    Quicktime RM-6076
    Fidanza aluminum flywheel
(Turd gen camaro clutch system 5.0 with 5 speed borg warner)
    ACT 3000903 clutch
    ACT GM012 pressure plate

First thing is going to be machining a pilot bushing
the LS1 t56 uses a smaller intip shaft tip than the viper t56. Viper input shaft has a 0.750" tip where as the LS1 uses a 0.565" tip

going to buy some oil impregnated bronze to make custom bushings

Just realized I put this in build's and jackstand queens, can a mod move this to the drivetrain forum?

Ordering Flywheel bolts today, stock one's are 7/16-20 x 1/2. The fidanza flywheel is 1/2" thick where the bolts go through.

Arp's chrysler 7/16-20 flywheel bolts have an under head length of only 3/4" arp 240-2801

but the Chevy and Ford ones have an extra 1/4" that isn't threaded to provide an under head length of 1" arp 100-2801

Ordered them and will see if they work, and of course the Chevy bolts are half the price

Didn't mount my flywheel yet, but I got the bell housing mounted to the transmission, fits nice, but some of the bolts are incorrect length, and there is a mounting hole drilled in the bell housing that doesn't exist in the transmission. I'm guessing they use the same mounting faces for both of their part numbers and the viper just has extra mounting bolts. overall it's a nice piece... going to have to mount the flywheel yet and put some putty in the end of the crank to see how the input shaft sits in the crank.

Are you not going to use the forward shifting position?

No I plan on just cutting a hole in the floor, I'd rather have the shifter as close to vertical as possible, vs a long shift lever

Yeah, I thought about that but I'll probably mount the center console from a bench seat auto truck under the dash up front, and just a fire extinguisher between the seats.

Mocked up the clutch and pressure plate on the flywheel. I bought 3/8-16 x 1" grade 8 bolts for the pressure plate because that's the size that the 5.2 truck's use but they're too long going to be either 5/8" or 3/4". This is starting to look pretty rad.

Got the Needle bearing pressed out of the stock 5.9 manual crank bushing. Then got the stock LS1 T56 pilot bushing turned down and pressed into the mopar crank bushing. I'll have to check the seating depth of the input shaft tomorrow, but it should work slick.

got the input shaft removed from the T56, getting it shortened by 0.400" once I get it back everything should bolt right up... I hope...

    GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

Got the input shaft back from my friend and it fits! Just barely, probably should have gotten another 0.030 to 0.050 taken off the face of the splines but it'll be fine, I can turn the rear of the input shaft by hand with the trans in gear. Now I just need to wait for the new clutch disk to show up so I can measure for my throw out bearing shim.

So the F-Body throw out bearing is too long. My bell to clutch distance is 1.778" and my release bearing to trans face distance is 1.943" with the release bearing fully compressed. 1.778-1.943= -0.165"

the airgap should be 0.125" to 0.200"

quicktime makes a 0.250" spacer and American powertrain makes a 0.375" spacer.

quicktime would net -0.165"+0.250"=0.085" which is on the tight side
American power train -0.165"+0.375"=0.210" would need a to shim the bearing a bit.

ordered American Powertrain APGM-20001 0.375" spacer
    http://americanpowertrain.com/i-8425...ng-spacer.html

and Tick Performance 0.055" Throw out bearing shim
    http://www.tickperformance.com/tick-...nder-shim-055/

Should net me 0.155" of throw out bearing air gap. Need to also get extended dowel pins for the transmission.
