Thread: My Drag Truck Build

  1. #1

    Default My Drag Truck Build

    Hey All,

Pretty new to the forum, been busy working on my truck so i figured i would post some pictures and updates of the build, June 15th i picked up 97 Dakota 4 cyl 5 speed, Silver, Shortbox, pretty straight a few dents and such, the goal here is to get back into drag racing, i enjoyed Friday night drags when i was in high school, but never took it past that. i have a 73 duster that i was going to race, i built it when i was pretty young and it would need a lot of things done differently to race with, so i decided to start fresh, my duster is a great sunday cruiser!

So far i have done the following.

All new front end to include lower arms all new balljoints and bushings
    Belltech 2"inch Drop Springs
    Calvert Drag Shocks
    Removed Sway bar
cleaned up and painted front end
picked up some smoked headlights to replace the broken stockers
replaced the lower bumper cover with new

15x4 vision star wheels wrapped in 29x4.5x15 Hoosier Front Runners

Inside i stripped everything removed all the original wiring, dash harnesses, airbags etc

Installed new gauges in place of the radio

installed al needed toggles in place of the heater controls

headlight switch is now starter button

    installed nitrous purge switch

kept the functionality of the oe ignition switch

removed glove box and fabbed up a panel to hold all the main wiring, relays, fuses, ignition etc...

Hope you like what i have done so Far!! more to come!

i am going fuel injected magnum with my duster since mainly cruise it around town, the motor that is currently in there will be in the truck with a 904 that i am getting ready to build..

    Motor Specs

    360 Punched .060 over
    Eddy Heads..untouched
    Comp 294S cam 525 lift 294 duration
    10.5:1 pistons
stock bottom end with arp main and rod studs

motor has about 10k miles on it..i beat the piss out of it...going to freshen it up and drop it in...will be running a different carb and intake set up most likely though.
will be spraying 150 shot of nitrous.

i was lucky enough to be able to score some hubs from another member on here, the 5 lug conversion was probably the most frustrating part of this build so far, but that is a whole other story lol

Got the panel mounted today and all the dash wiring complete and tested! everything works perfectly!!! now on to other parts of the build...also had it outside today and took some better pictures of the truck itself... i picked it up for 500 bucks...aside from the front end work front wheels and tires and headlights this is exactly how it looked the day i picked it up. it ran, was able to drive it right up onto the car trailer motor is bad has a pretty severe valve train noise...

body is overall pretty straight the most damage from the fact that it had a tanoue cover at some point and the hinges rubbed on the cab pretty severely..also nice little dent from something under right rear tail light...not to concerned with either at the current time.

rear end is still up in the air.... i have heard alot of people that seem to say the 8/14 will hold up..i have one in my duster now with a pretty healthy 360 and it has held up grate..although street driven only! i wouldnt mind a 9 1/4 if i could find one for a decent price....i feel like everyone wants like new prices for there junkyard parts so its a battle...i was originaly gong to pull the motor from my duster and put in the dak but i cant bring myself to tare that care apart... so going to build a mild magnum motor on nitrous for the truck to get me started and go from there..will back it with a 904 most likely..as far as engine build i am thinking a stock bottom end with forged pistons and a Hughes engines top side package.. some spray and go from there! i have not drag raced in quite some time and want to get my bearings and a feel for the truck before i put crazy hp in it.. but i think that set up will be fun for sure!

Hey Guys, Have been super busy lately with work and life...shit gets in the way sometimes..few updates....removed the bed to gain access to everything completely stripped down clean and repainted rear frame rails..not a professional job by any means but clean and black is better then what it was.... got my leaf springs in..just got to order caltracs and finish up rear end and can start reassembly.gonna stick with the 8 1/4 for a while..mainly because i had some parts for it laying around that i bought for my other car that i never ended up using...also got my tach mounted in a position i think i like..as for motor..the original plan was to pull the one out of duster and build new for duster..after much thought i decided i couldn't bring myself to rip my car apart..after some research i found a recent article in hot rod showcasing a build that net about 450hp..that i am following with a few deviations including spray..i picked up a standard bore block and have started stockpiling parts..pistons/bearings ect...getting ready to drop off to machine shop...any way thats all for right now.. ...also what is everyone useing to post pictures now?

Wasn't ignoring you on messenger, I have been banned and messenger doesn't work when you are banned from dumb book.
Anyway the 8 1/4 rear is stronger than people think and should be fine, just watch your rpm when doing a burnout, I use to break axles in the burnout from wheel hop.
