    Default Front Brakes and Rotors

I replaced the front brakes and rotors on my 99 RT. Everything went well until the test drive. Got about 2 miles from home and the drivers side front was smoking bad. I got it home and it cooked my new rotor and pads.

Long story short, the caliper seized. Any way, put on a new caliper, rotor and pads, bled the brakes and all is good.

FYI, when removing the caliper pins, I did not have the correct size hex bit to remove them. Dug around in my toolbox and a T47 Torx Bit fit perfectly. Not sure if all year Dakota caliper pins are same size, but it worked fine, no stripping and fit like a glove.

what he said. shoulda used a 7mm allen head.

and replace that shit. bad rubber hoses fill calipers with shit, and cause them to sieze up...smoking your brakes.

you should buy one of my brake kits. no bad hoses, no 7mm allen heads, just black eyes from your forehead smacking the dash from stopping so hard

    SlammedR/T - 7mm. Got it. Thanks.

Filthy Filbert - If I had the extra cash, I would buy a set of your eye blackening brakes. Getting ready to close on a house, so funds are tight.

I will have to get a set of the brake hoses and go ahead and replace the passenger caliper.

    Thanks for the info.

Roger that. Gonna pick up a set this weekend right after I take my finals. Being a full time student, full time job, with a teenager, 3 year old, getting ready to close on a house, sell another house and move is stressful, so working on the RT is my stress reliever, unless shit starts breaking. But I digress.

Front kits will be posted soon. I will be picking up the brackets in a week or so for the 6-piston set-up. 4-piston viper kits are soon to follow

My rotor just locked up also. Retention clip failed and logged between caliper and rotor. Caliper locked and piston cracked. Before I replace I remember reading posts on here about replacing your calipers with 03 durango calipers. On rock auto i saw the product and for the last year of durango they changed from one FUBAR piston to two smaller pistons that don't eat the pad. Does anyone know if stock '03 durango's holes line up, i don't know if my pads will but kinda hope on my '00 RT? They are same price and coated, premium calipers + hardware are only $30 each. If anyone knows I'd appreciate it. Sooner the better, the thing is on jack stands now.

No. To run the 2-piston calipers, you need 03/04 spindles. You cannot just swap calipers.

The 03-04 setup is far superior. 12" rotor vs 11" and Dual pistons vs a single.

You need everything between the upper and lower ball joints plus the flex brake line. With the possible exception of the hub, if yours are good.

you can get a braided stainless hose kit from Crown Performance. Get those. The difference in brake feel is pretty dramatic

It's 03 spindles from a 2wd Durango that will also work, correct?

I just finished my swap to 03 Durango brakes, only have about 20 miles on them, so far I'm very happy.

I'm starting to look on the other forums and searching the yards for an 03 Durango for the front spindles.
Glad to hear the good results from this upgrade.

No and Yes, same size as the 03 Durango but not interchangeable, they are made by a different vendor.
