    Default Drift trike build

It's not a dakota but deal with it.

So my girlfriend bought one for her daughter and since I'm a kid at heart I figured I would build one. The adult drft trikes are a good bit of money which I don't want to spend. If I was building one without pedals then it would be very easy but this requires a free spinning hub. I picked up the green machine today and I'll used the front end and rear axle. I'll used part of that head tube and fork from the bicycle. The plan is to make it similar to these. This could possibly be the only build that I ever complete LOL

I used to ride those green machines all the time when I was little. Those things are a blast. Also flipped it and cut myself up a few times trying to drift at too fast a speed

Bent the tubing a little more. Didn't want it right against my nuts.

Cut the axle so I can widen it. Not sure how I'm going to go about widening it though.

Did a couple test notches to make sure everything was lined up. I think I need to notch it at my original mark. I don't know if the head tube will need bracing but I sure hope it doesn't. I'm trying to keep this clean looking.

Apparently a group of my friends at school drift around campus at night. They hit the parking garages and take the elevator back up LOL

I'd cut it down the middle and put the extension tube in the center. This way the ends of the axle still have the original support they had when it was one piece, or do those lines on the caps of the tub not run all the way through ?

The caps are only at the ends and about 1" deep. The problem is that the axle goes all the way through and I need to lengthen that. I'm tempted to just make my own axle using a piece of tubing and plug welding grade 8 bolts into the ends.

Just be sure to use a thick enough Gauge steel tubing. Don't want the heat from the welder warping the tureness of the axle. How thick does the axle need to be? You might be able to find a solid piece of rod at a hardware store and just cut it to length no?

Edit, I see what you mean now, the wheels are held on by a nut that's threaded on the the end of the axle right? If that's the case welding the bolt on the end would probably work so long as the axle doesn't lose warp. Or maybe get the solid rod and a die to thread the ends?? Just thinking out loud

I would rather use a solid rod but I would have to turn the end of the rod down in order to have room for a nut. I'll see what I can think of tomorrow

I'm using 1-5/8" 0.120" wall DOM. It's the only die I have for the bender. I have larger stuff that I can I can use but it's pretty excessive.

So the axle tube with the GM is paper thin and I don't exactly care for the plastic end caps that support the axle shaft. I'm going to pick up a 3' section of 1/2" round stock from fastenal. I'll make the housing out of 1-5/8" 0.120" wall DOM and then weld a cap on the ends. I'll drill the cap and slide the shaft through the housing and weld it the end caps. The ends of the round stock will either have to be threaded or I could use a pin at the end.

I ended up going wider and I'll probably shorten it. Need to complete the welds and I'll add clip bearings or bushings.

Rode it for the first time today and busted my ass lol the hill wasn't steep enough and I need to add bearings or bushings to the axle. Planning on buying some delrin stock and machining bushings to press into the housing once the lathe comes in. Made a wood seat till the real one comes. Not my best photo but it shows her sass lol
