Thread: anyone try block hugger manifolds for turbo fab?

  1. #1

Default anyone try block hugger manifolds for turbo fab?

I know flipped manifolds run into the power steering pump and reservoir on the driver side and others have used shortie headers to build a kit....has anyone tried using block hugger style headers? Only issue I can see is possibility of motor mount interference or upper control arm issues. I have a gen 2 dakota with a 5.9. Welding and building things dont bother me, this is more out of curiosity if it has been tried or not.

If it's a gen II then you can use normal shorties.

Scratch that. I just remembered that I made my system without the power steering pump. Sorry.

I got excited when i read your first post, then was going to ask if you had pics of the install. However id still like pics of any fabrication you have to help get ideas of routing. Ive done turbo 4cyl cars but this would be my first v8.

lol that was before building the garage. There are some threads on RM but not much. I bought the truck with an early 360 crate motor (m1 and cam), 727 and a 8.75 rear. Trans had a really low stall and gears were 3:55. I had a local guy install ladder bars because I didn't know how to weld yet. Took it tool the track and ran 13.7 but managed to run consistent 12.4 after a few trips. Started to tear it down for a full blown build which was going to use the 418 from the rt but then I ran into block issues. It's sat every since and repairing the RT has taken forever since going back to school. I've almost finished the new build in the RT and plan to start back on the gen II in the summer.

Thanks for the history on the truck. Mine is just a freshly rebuilt 360 with a hv oil pump, double roller timing chain, crane cam and harderned pushrods, upgraded valve springs and ARP head bolts. As for the rest of the truck its rebuilt front suspension with prothane bushings new balls, and tie rods. Out back ive got a locker with 4.11s and caltracs. I want to make 400whp so turbo was my go to choice but tuning it has been my concern so ive been saving up for a Holley Dominator which im just past the half way point now.

And like you I went to school, just bought my first house and have just about finished remodeling the little ranch. Just need to finish drywall in the garage now. I've had parts sitting around for the dakota and an engine build for my daily driver that needs to be assembled so I can finish turbo fab on my cavalier. What are you using for engine management on the gen 2 truck?

Yup! But I used those for my 2000 (supercharged) for now and will flip them when I switch to turbo.

Random update to this thread, said screw it and got an ms3pro in the mail, so over the winter I'll possibly get some block huggers to test fitment while I'm wiring up the ms3pro

    Good to hear.
Hope to have my R/T back to driveable here this week, then it will be on to my Gen2.

It will probably take me forever, but it will be a turbo 5.9 based build.Since it’s a ’96 though,Ryan will be called upon to tune it.

good stuff . I just got msII for my f150... How far in the way is the ps pump?

No. Clue. Haven't worked on that yet. Truck is outside and has random electrical issues with my harness...being 21years old and not being able to tune the obd1 ECM lead to me buying a standalone. I still need to hit up my locL junk yard for the JGC PS bracket so I can compare them.

Random update, primed the oil pump since truck sat for a long time without being ran, fired up with new battery. I'm going to be pulling the 5.9/46rh ecm/harness and sell it. I've also got a new M1 4bbl intake and new mopar 4 bbl throttle body I'll be selling off as well. It's cold and I'll be starting school/working full time but I'll be pulling my Doug Thorley tri-y headers and selling them when I pull the motor/trans. At that point I'll be doing new brake lines and running -8an feed and using my -6 as my return for the new combo with a single 450L/hr pump. It will be a while before I get it together but I've had the itch to start working on the truck since my wedding is done and majority of the household projects are done.
