Nowadays, with power levels on some boosted applications easily hitting the 600 plus RWHP level many find that the 46 RE trans can be a bit clumsy at times. Even some large cammed N/A builds are getting into the mid 400 RWHP area may benefit from loosing the 46 RE. With these power levels in mind some get to the point where the overdrive is no longer needed since the vehicle is not really daily driven anymore.
The 46RE is heavier than the 727 and also consumes more power, but how much heavier and how much more power does the 46 RE consume? Is the swap really worth loosing the overdrive, and is worth spending money on all the parts needed to complete the conversion?
We are going to answer these questions. Our test bed is a 99 RT with a built 408 stroker. We are going to make a baseline with the 46 than remove it and install a freshly built 727. We will also give a list of items needed to install a 727 in place of a 46 RE. This will also be CEL free to pass inspection. Stay tuned!!!!!
