Thread: 46re vs 727

  1. #1

    Default 46re vs 727

Nowadays, with power levels on some boosted applications easily hitting the 600 plus RWHP level many find that the 46 RE trans can be a bit clumsy at times. Even some large cammed N/A builds are getting into the mid 400 RWHP area may benefit from loosing the 46 RE. With these power levels in mind some get to the point where the overdrive is no longer needed since the vehicle is not really daily driven anymore.

The 46RE is heavier than the 727 and also consumes more power, but how much heavier and how much more power does the 46 RE consume? Is the swap really worth loosing the overdrive, and is worth spending money on all the parts needed to complete the conversion?

We are going to answer these questions. Our test bed is a 99 RT with a built 408 stroker. We are going to make a baseline with the 46 than remove it and install a freshly built 727. We will also give a list of items needed to install a 727 in place of a 46 RE. This will also be CEL free to pass inspection. Stay tuned!!!!!

I know what it did for me...I was stunned, but I'm sure the 2800 to 4000 stall helped.
But I went from a Martin Saine manual shift 46RE to a Cope 727, so it's not like I was running junk before the 727.

Is this a track test or Dyno?

It will be on the dyno only. It is not my truck and that would be a bit involved to travel to the track. Not sure why the power numbers can't tell the story. All we are trying to do is to get an idea of how much power is being consumed in the drive line. A chassis dyno does a good job of that. We tested wheel bearings for a dirt track company where the total difference between three sets of bearings was about 10 horsepower. I think the gain will be a bit larger than that. However Dave I see where you are coming from.

I want to be able to cruise and that's already a stretch with 4.56 gears, but after last weekend I might say fuck it, gut the Ape and make it track only. If I go that route the 46RE is first to go and then a rebuild with a forged crank. Can't wait to see the results...

I too will be interested in seeing the numbers.... even though I DO like that OD and lockup for "nice drives" at triple digits for a distance.

Afterall, I do live in a desert - and the roads are for the most part "deserted."

46 is 100lb heavier, has 10% more parasitic loss, and is a rat bastard.

727 swap will gain you 3-5 tenths in the quarter.

I saw over a second, but I also swapped from a 2800 stall to 4000 8". My cam liked it.

What did it gain you?? My notes are so old I'm not 100% certain..cough but about 10 years ago I swapped to an SMR full tilt 904 and I believe the net gain was about .3 (3 tenths) we had thought / hoped I was going to pick up .5, but .3 is not too shabby when you think about it. IMO this is a mod for strip vehicle only which at that pout in time is what the truck became.

Looking forward to seeing the results in this test but for me I love having my street truck

Hey Chris I'm doing the swap right now, just gathering a few more parts.

The weight mixed with the loss of the Od unit is the biggest gain. Adobe gained massive Ben just with the stall change haha

    I'll be going from a stock 44re with a 3600 stalll to the 727 with around a 4000 9.5" converter and a transbrake
