You using a manual lathe?
Machined a groove for the spring clip and turned that face down so it's close to flush with the shank. I also sanded the casting marks off the outside. All that's left for this one is to thread it. I've accepted an offer as a manufacturing engineer and I'll have access to a lot of machinery. I'll probably wait to ask for help with threading. I would be pissed to screw this up.

Thanks! I've been stressed out about it but managed to get two offers before graduating. The other was a project engineer for 16 D.C tunnels. The pay was higher but I felt as if I could have gotten the job with my current works experience. Plus, manufacturing will give me more options in the future. Having personal access to CNC machines as well as 3D printers will be nice.
Great field to be in, Congrats. I wish I had the education to take advantage of the tools in my shop. I teach a high school course in manufacturing and robotics, but I only have a degree in education. I somehow passed the certification test to do the job, so I have to learn all the equipment on my own. We have 3d printers, laser engravers, cnc routers and plasma cutters. In the last few days I have taught myself rudimentary TIG welding.
My girlfriend teaches the same class and she's in your situation. She went to school for you basic business but that went nowhere so she went back and got her masters in teaching. It's nice to be able to rant about projects etc and have her follow everything I talk about. All the schools are here are getting rid of engineering programs unless it's computer related. There is too much liability.
That's cool about your wife. There are almost no females that do my job here. It's funny because my best welders are always the girls(at least with stick and Oxy/fuel, everyone can MIG).

Finally got the threading insert and holder. I've been considering using solid alum between the two rod ends but I don't care for fine thread in alum. The weight is about the same for steel tubing and solid alum. I haven't calculated the buckling safety factor but quick thermal expansion calculations estimate the alum expanding 0.045" and the steel expanding 0.023".
