Thread: Dallas Area Paint Shop

  1. #1

    Default Dallas Area Paint Shop

Can anybody recommend from first hand knowledge a good, reliable paint shop in the Dallas area? I live north of Dallas.

I am looking for a better than OEM paint for my Dakota (which is still a daily driver). I want it to look good but not a show stopper. I will spray the bed with a liner, so no painting required there. I don't want an A-1 paint job costing $15,000-$20,000. Hoping I can find a paint job preferably around $5,000, $7500 absolute maximum. Am I kidding myself?

    Thanks!

I can point you to a great shop that will do a great job that would most likely be closer to the low end of your budget. You would have to travel though because they are west of Austin.

If you want, I can get some info from a client of mine, that owns a collision repair shop. They are a newer company, have had a friend use them to repair a vehicle that he wrecked, but outside of that, I haven't had any experience with them. They did (what looks like) good work on his vehicle, and I'd imagine that they would be on the lower end of the price range you mentioned.

I have had experience with Herb's in Plano, off of 75. They do outstanding work, but are proud of it. Not sure where they fall in pricing, but I'm sure it's on the higher end.

    Kamezzle13,

I went to the Herb's in Allen and was told that they don't paint whole vehicles only paint due to collision repairs. Weird!!

Yes, please check with your client. Thanks!

I ran into alot of that while I was looking for a great shop. I was either turned away or quoted 8k! I was later told by a buddy in the industry that the reason for this is most body shops only like to do insurance repairs because they are quicker and they can nail the insurance companys. How true that is I cannot say but it makes alot of sense.

    Angry Frustrated!!!

    HELP!!!

I made almost 20 calls today about painting my Dakota in the north Dallas area and only found 3 that painted whole vehicles. Crazy!

I drove to one today and he quoted me $10,000. Damn! A lot of money for a daily driver. He told me he uses only PPG paint and the paint alone would cost $3,000. Sandpaper, additives, etc. would be extra. That seems excessive for paint.

Can anybody help me? I'm not looking for a Maaco paint job for $1000 but I don't want to spend $10,000 either. Somewhere in the $5,000 to $6,000 range.

    Thanks!

I have mine at Denton County Collision Center as we speak. Doing front end accident repair (hood, grill, bumper, both fenders and a door. Also having him repair/repaint the rest of the truck. Not sure what he would charge for the entire truck but I am paying $2300 for one door, the roof and bed. There were a few good sized dents and a bit of hail damage.

The Shop that is painting my truck is stripping it down to include removing the bed, linexing the bed, up to 5 coats of paint wet sanded, 3 coats if clear wet sanded with 2 more coats of clear wet sanded for 6K. Not to mention fixing the rust spots and prepping all of the aftermarket body parts going on. If you were serious expecting to spend between $15,000-$20,000it might be worth your while to drive the truck to Roman Roads Restoration in North Wilkesboro, NC. It will be a costly drive, but with your expected buget, it would wind up well under. It would be less than half of you bottom number.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the help. Believe it or not, a friend of mine says that his friend is a great painter who had his own shop but he now works at Maaco. I went to his house and saw 3 cars that were painted by him; they all looked great.

I went to the Maaco store where he worked, spent about 2 hours talking and decided that I would have them do it. I'm bringing the truck in next Monday. It will be there for 3 weeks. He said 3 coats of color, 6 coats of clear. After the paint cures for a month, bring it back and he will wet sand it with 3000 paper. I added things to the cost like a two tone paint job, removing headlights/taillights, painting some interior plastic and installing a roll pan. The quoted price was $3900. The first price I got under $8,000. I'm excited. Stay tuned..............

I worked at a Maaco back in the late 70's as a summer fill in job waiting for the Carpenters Local to start taking on new members (Country coming out of a crap economy). While there we painted my 70 GS Stage 1, I did all of the prep, complete stripping, priming and blocking, then had the shop painter lay down the paint. The painter there was damn good, IIRC it was a PPG single stage, painted it last thing on a Friday and left it in the booth over night.

Supply your own paint, don't use theirs unless they have changed the paint supplier procedures over the years.

    9t9-5.2,

I am getting the Platinum paint service. He told me it's a paint quality upgrade. We shall see.

    Thanks!

I know somebody on here said that "Matrix" is a complete rip-off of "PPG" paint. It is a very good paint and costs much less than PPG. Mine has been painted 9 1/2 yrs now, it's still beautiful! Just make sure you/they PREP...PREP...PREP!

    99dart,

I am paying extra for removal of headlights/taillights, bumpers, etc. They will also sand down the old paint, fix any blemishes and then prime it. 3 coats of color and 6 coats of clear. Afterwards, completing the normal sand and shine. A month after painting, I will bring it back and this gent said he will personally wet sand it up to 3000 sandpaper and buff it. I know everything sounds good on paper. I'm anxious but optimistic. If I don't like it, they don't get my money until I do.

Sweet! Sounds like have all the bases covered. The final wet sand/buff really makes the paint deep! It'll be killer!
