    Default Truetrac failure?

    Pulled the rear apart to replace the crush sleeve and discovered this. Has this happened to anyone else? At one point I ran 10" slicks with some decent power.

    How would I be able to tell? The C clips are a little chewed up. There is a large "puck" that sits between the axles. I read about two other people who had this problem and they basically reached the power limit.

    That's heat and friction. I don't think the axles would cause damage in that area, because they float on the c-clips.

    Were you using synthetic, or regular gear oil?

    Not sure on the fluid. Had a local shop install everything.

    I have the Truetrac in a Durango. When I installed it, I remember it needing regular gear oil, rather than synthetic. That looks like your problem. That surface is the friction surface for the gears, when they are under load.

    Anyone see an issue with taking it apart, cleaning it up the best I can and running it? Was planning on getting a B&M cover. The idea of another $700 is really not sitting well with me at this point.

    I'm switching my diff cover his weekend, I'll check the condition of the truetrac while I'm in there. I ran redline diff fluid.

    Ok thanks. Let me know if the ends of your axles look the same. I'm thinking it just from being heat treated. The puck that sits between them is fine.

    Called eaton, no help to say the least. "Fill it with oil and run it". No documentation on the unit but all bolts are 85-90 ft-lbs

    I've never opened mine up, every spring though, I drain the fluid and refill with Royal purple 80-90, and some Lucas

    Just installed mine a couple of months ago. Eaton recommends dino oil. NO SYNTHETICS! BTW, was there any audible clues that there was a problem?

    I'm just going to deburr it and possibly radius the edge so hopefully it doesn't keep happening. I'll keep an eye on it.

    I would use a diamond file and VERY carefully deburr any of that stuff that is raised. Other than that, put it back together with the recommended fluid and run the fucker.

    I was just going to clean it up with a fine Dremel sanding wheel lol it's going to happen again as soon as I run it. I think it's because of the opening needed to reach the c clips.

    Doesn't look like serious wear. Just some heat build up. As mentioned, deburr up the rough/burnt spots and see what happens. I'm curious to know what oil the guy put in there. Good luck and keep us informed.

    Deburred everything and opened the oil passages just a hair. As the unit wears it closes of the oil passages and stops them up.
