Forgive the ignorance but what are they?

Pieces of overpriced aluminum scrap which have no function. Very similar to a tb spacer.
Is that the fact sheet or the abridged version?

I believe they are supposed to disperse the air more evenly instead of the air hitting the flat bottom of the intake.

That particular pair was designed to be used with the EGR equipped M1 2bbl. You can make them work with the non EGR as well, but takes more work.

[Duner] : I was afraid I was going to go too fast and scare myself. Lucky for me - the DA rose up to save me.
[Kotta390] : Oh that's right! Well FML.....Looks like I am getting shafted because of my bore size
[BlakDak71] : I don't run oil, I run a special blend consisting of Hellman's mayo and the tears of a pregnant mermaid
[Kotta390] : My electric water pump puts out too much fuel at idle and is not a variable pump which makes it overheat in the summer at idle if I sit too long
[KotaRT] : Ed, you can have cake, as long as I get something in return
Oh, and FWIW, the quickest and fastest NA stock longblock record was done with a medium turtle in place.... 12.97 @ 105

I googled the name and product and found this old archived message on this other board. It talks about size in more detail.

Your problem isn't the problem. Your reaction is the problem.
Might be easier to sell if you would separate them.

Was hoping Danno would chime in. Glad he did. These not only help direct the airflow reducing turbulance in the plenum, but they also help fill the plenum area increasing velocity, and in turn, vacuum signal. Also more or less increasing length of runners. Jeff did a lot of testing with these, which is why there were three sizes available. As they weren't a one size fits all mod. Large for light bolt ons, medium for heavy NA, and small for boosted applications. He had documented dyno numbers.
