Thread: Need help deciding on a new finish for my R/T 20's

  1. #1

Question Need help deciding on a new finish for my R/T 20's

I've recently acquired a set of R/T 20" replicas (accepts stock center caps), however the chrome finish on them isn't up to my standards so I've been kicking around the possibilities of what I would do if I had them re-finished. I'm not trying to spend more than the $200-300 dollar per wheel area. But dependent upon future information, I understand that is subject to change haha. Wheels otherwise are in great shape, no road rash, bends or cracks.

So, in case you haven't seen my truck before, here's more or less what we are working with; Minus some certain red calipers that will be @ all 4 corners soon.

And here are the wheels now as they sit. As you can see they are heavily guarded

I have considered the following finishes, but I'm open to other finishes as well.

    1) Black Chrome
    2) PC Gunmetal grey
    3) PC OEM Silver
    4) PC Black
    5) PC Charcoal grey

Let me know what you guys think, thanks for lookin'

A combo of gun metal grey and red to match your decals would like pretty good IMO.

Im not sure you want to paint or powder on top of the chrome finish if it isnt perfect. And taking the chrome off is going to set you back what you are expecting to pay for the finish. Also when you dip the chrome to remove the plating, sometimes it leaves pitting that has to be repaired before re-coating.

Black Chrome is the way I am going to go. Do those caps have a dodge emblem in the center?

    This

Black trucks done right look awesome, but the problem with black (and I say this about grill inserts) is that it basically makes things disappear. You have these special rims and if done in black they might as well be sport 15"ers. Chrome could cause the opposite and overpower your truck since they are big rims and the rest of the truck is black. I think a dark gray keeps with the dark look of the truck without acting like "rim camouflage" and a red stripe around the outer edge would look awesome.

I think they'd look good in black, but black would basically hide a lot of what makes those rims special.

i powdered a gunmetal color over my slightly peeling and barely pitted chrome 20's. i know you're "supposed" to take them in to an electroplating shop to have them stripped, but i opted just to have my powder guy blast them. I have a few areas that are slightly yellowish. I'm not sure if that's the clear or the chrome coming through but it's not enough to bother me and i think they look great.

    i used this stuff: http://powder365.com/store/index.php...roducts_id=390

May I please buy those? It'll kill 2 birds with one stone, I up my wheel size and avoid powercoating my current wheels at the same time

i think about trading them sometimes for viper wheels but i can never decide which ones i want. what stops me is, if i don't like them- finding these 20's again would be a pain. vipers are a "dime" a dozen.

    15" FTW....

I know, old fuck, but these things look better with more rubber in the wheel well, not rim...Rubber.

I have been considering getting a set of 15" rims all around with some white letter tires (not sure if that will look good or bad) for a more "classic" style look.

    It's not that hard.
My truck ran mid 14's stockish, built the truck with the first 408 and on the very 1st pass it went 11.52 I think.
