    Default Welders...Come on in.

I'm notching the additional 4130 bars for my cage using a Harbor Freight tubing notcher, it works great, perfect notches. I don't have a problem figuring the angles, measuring, etc., I build stuff.

But....On the Halo, the bending process distorted the tube a little bit and cutting the notch in the tube that will butt into the halo is a total bitch, I roughed it in and finished with a file but it's not perfect.

My question is...For Tig Welding, how much of a gap between parts is acceptable?

FYI: I'm not welding it, I have a guy lined up for that.

It is preferred that the gap be roughly the size of the filler rod, but any gap can be filled by running a bead down one side and then back up the other. It just won't look as pretty.

Agreed with Alan. I wouldn't weld down hill passes not as much fusion to base metal, also depends on how critical of a weld it is structurally. I would not go any wider than the material. Imop.

I'm not wider than the tube which is .083, but the other joints cut with the notcher a perfect.

I fit up with as little gap to no gap as possible for tig welding. You should be able to get full penn with the right settings but a 1/16" root/gap would be the biggest I would go and it will make it easier to get that full penetration.

I doubt I will ever get my chassis certified, this is for my own piece of mind, can you MIG 4130?

I wouldn't bother with mig. You will produce a much better weld with tig and it will look far better to depending on the welder. The gap seams fine. As you said its no bigger then the wall of the tubing.

Yes but is recomended to pre heat to 300* for ridgity due to stress cracking.
Or You can weld it with 70s tig wire also which isn't as strong but will work.

Well you can run a root pass then a cover pass, then come back and wash it out while on pulse mode making your weld to look nicer and wider, basically walking the cup

Unless they X-ray your chassis I don't think they would ever be able to tell if you had full penn. Do they X-ray to certify roll cages and chassis?

I don't mig weld much so as for using Mig for 4130 I would ask Lunchbox or Alan. I'm pretty much carbon steel when I am using Mig. I know you can get stainless wire for mig welders though.

YEP, YEP, YEP! this will give you a beauty of a finished look and walking the cup makes life easier for some.
I myself suck at walking the cup. My friends all laugh at me because I can weld without doing it and when I try it looks like crap.

That is basically the tensile strength of the wire, has more carbon making it a harder metal.
Slightly more heat required to weld.
80s wire runs similar to mig
Are you using .035 with mix gas 75/25
Lots of mig now adays are ran with 9010 gas, almost like a spray arc.

Guy welding it is a certified retired Navy welder...He's not cheap. I just want it to be strong, don't care how it looks.

Should work just fine as long as you know he has quality work it is worth it.

Or If you can ship it, send it to me I will weld it for free.

Er70 ..035 with 75/25 would be plenty, if it's mig welded right, but I would prefer tig welding it, deeper penetration

There's a couple places the fitment isn't perfect, but access to weld isn't either because I'm adding to an 8 point that's already in...I will fab 1-5/8" gussets for those spots that will be notched perfectly, but it's those few places I'm stressing over.

I sent the welder a text, he's welded for me before....He's the guy I should ask but I need to know what to ask. The guy whom welded my DOM 8 point is stupid good, but he don't do no tig. I should have ordered DOM tubing instead of 4130.
