Default clicking noise yesterday...no reverse today. UPDATED with pics.

so it's obvious I have a transmission problem the question is how long do I have before the tranny goes out completely? it shifts and works fine and all the forward gears. Just no reverse.

    ...and no remorse

My 02 lost reverse and I drove it for 2+ years like that and it still shifted fine in the forward gears.

so I may still have plenty of time to round up another one??
did you replace yours or did you repair it??
what was the fix or did it need a complete rebuild??

I ended up wrecking the truck and never repaired the trans.

The only explanation I recall reading on it though was that reverse and 1st gear share something like a band or something is shared/connected between the two (was probably 5+ years ago so I can't remember exactly). And my manually shifting from 1st to 2nd caused reverse to wear out.

I never had a clicking though.. Mine started slipping in reverse, as if I were riding a clutch and never fully releasing it. Then one day it was just gone all together.

    this happened overnight without warning.
I remember reading something about a clicking noise and a failed transmission component.
I will research it more when I get the time.
    thanks again

could be the reverse servo/piston or retainer failure ...drop pan
for manual shifting you have to put in a hd spring and make the piston solid
Randy have some nice servo kits

Hey thanks, I was thinking the same thing and after looking hard at the fluid again it's burnt. So I'm not gonna even open the tranny up until I pull it. May have it rebuilt. She is parked for now and in a few days I will have to drive it 180 miles home to work on it.

I've managed to find a new 46RE direct replacement from Dodge with converter for $1000. So, I should see it this coming Tuesday. Since there is no core on the new one I will have the old one to make for a nice little build at my convenience.

I will do, but I need to wait on my wallet to recover from the $1000 hit for the new transmission.

I will post up pics when I get the new tranny from Dodge.

Dodge Dealer just called and said I have a brand new 46RE waiting on me.

It will be three or four days before I get home to pick it up.

    From Dodge.
I know a parts guru in Florida that has worked for Dodge for 38 years.
The Dodge parts guys back home told me they could not get a 46re anymore.
It was priceless when I produced a part number from my man in Florida
They had to make phone calls and cross reference my tranny and VIN numbers to be sure it was a direct replacement.
Anyways, the tranny is waiting on me at my Dodge dealer right now. He called this morning and I asked him to grab a tech and go confirm that it was indeed a 46re inside the clamshell box. Will have some pics about Thursday or Friday.

I know, wish I had more time and money to upgrade the parts inside before pouring any oil into it. Gonna try Amsoil ATF in it.

Parts man in Florida said the same thing, that the rear servo was a very common failure. I just got to get her 180 miles and then I can swap her out with the new one.

Hey old Red got me home safe and sound 180 miles. I beat on her pretty good @ 110 m.p.h. and the forward gears and shifting are still working great. Going to swap in the new tranny and lay the old tranny to rest in the cardboard coffin to keep for now. At some point I will follow up with the findings inside the old trans. when and if I have it rebuilt.

Here is link to new tranny pics and info:

Well I found my clicking noise. I don't know squat about trannys but judging by the diameter of that ring I would say it's from a gear set or clutch pack. She's toast......some shavings to the left in the pan too.

    Both servos look good.

Now you all can see what I mean by the color of the fluid eh???

yes looks like a snapring in the pan

    google is your friend

It is the OD Direct clutch snap ring. The break often from fatigue. I put a new one in every OH. When it breaks all the way out ,you will lose reverse.

    Here is where it goes.
