Thread: New guy with something a little different.

  1. #1

Default New guy with something a little different.

    So what to say..........

Well, my name is Jason and I live in Dallas, Tx. I don't actually own a Dakota, or any other Chrysler vehicle for that matter, but my toy (aka project moneypit) is a 1986 Mazda RX7 powered by a pretty mild carb'd 5.9 Magnum. Hence the reason I'm here, you guys seem to have some good engine tech on hand. Plus I race with a few members here so maybe they'll find their way to this thread.

Other mods to the car are fairly basic. Originally I ran a 904 behind the 360, but with 3.91 gears and 26" tires I knew I wanted an overdrive. Not liking any of the Chrysler offerings I wound up going with a built GM 2004r, and it's installed using an adapter kit from Wilcap. The rear is also no longer stock and is now sporting a fully independent 8.8 with 3.73 gears.

The car's fun. It was originally built so my Dad and I could do Drag Week, and in 2012 we made the trip with only minor issues. Since then I've been racing as much as I can. If any of you are from the DFW area chances are you've seen me at the track.

Well, that seems like a good start. I'm open to questions or whatever so feel free to ask if you like. Hopefully you guys won't flame me too bad.

    A few pics......

Wow that was fast. Engine mods are basic. Stock longblock with mild cam, intake, 650 dp, and headers. Currently it's set up to run on a 12 sec index but has been 11.80's @ ~113.

Nice. So no cage to crawl over either.

The cowl hood looks cool on there. Was it needed for air cleaner clearance?

It's got a rollbar in it now. I'm shooting for a 10 sec pass this year so the safety stuff had to be upgraded. As a matter of fact I only finished the rollbar a couple weeks ago.

Yes the cowl was needed for clearance. It's a little tall but I think it looks cool. At the highest point it's a 5" rise, and was needed because the original plan was blow-thru turbo and I needed enough clearance for the bonnet.

I'm liking the feedback so far. You never know when you join a vehicle specific group as an outsider.

Well, we WOULD have been our normal asshole selves if you joined with a Mustang. LOL We like "Different"… or at least I do for sure. The very first thing I ever think of is whether a turbo can fit under there.

A turbo would definitely fit (I made room for one on the drivers side in front of the head), but swapped RX7's are notorious for cooling problems and I have a hard time keeping it under 210 in the summer as it is. Even with the biggest radiator and fan that will fit, I'm convinced that the addition of the hot side piping under the hood would make it almost undriveable on hot 100+ degree summer days. Of course guys cut holes in their hood to vent the heat but I have a problem cutting up my one-off hood.

    So nitrous it is.

I just wonder why or how I've been so blessed with a cool running 360 in mine? Stock factory radiator, run the AC in the summer - stays right at 180° even in traffic with my dual fans.

    But nitrous will work! hehehe

    EDIT: Love the sig image

Sick ride, any videos of the beast? I seem to remember seeing it in HotRod a few years back when you did the power tour.
