Griner's RMVB with LBA, safe neutral, and transbrake is over 800 bucks. Just a point of reference.

Nothing wrong with 727s. that's what my car will have in it. I toyed with the idea of doing a TKO/T-56 swap to it, but finally decided that it left the factory with an auto, an auto will bolt right in and not require floor pan mods, so it'll stay an auto. Even swapping to a 833 4-spd would require tunnel mods.
3.91s and short tires though...I may be yanking the gears out and going 3.55 or 3.21 once it's on the road though! (bought the 3.91 pumpkin for it when I was thinking I'd put an OD transmission in it)
and since one hasn't been posted yet, a picture of what can happen to a 727 (any automatic really) when shit goes wrong:
when a manual trans clutch lets go, you're turning no more than 7500 rpm unless you've built yourself a NASCAR small block that turns 9-10 grand.
But, on an auto, the front drum spins a 2 1/2 times the engine RPM, so if you run your motor to 7 grand, you're looking at about 17,000 rpm on the drum.

Just to clarify, the front drum only spins that fast IF you have a sprag failure. A 46re is not immune from this failure mode but it does come with a 14 element sprag and everyone is running low band apply. You can run an upgraded sprag and low band apply in a 727 as well. A billet steel front drum is an excellent idea to help survive this failure mode.

I know this is a real old thread but what did the 727 end up costing you? I thought about a built 46 re but seems like 727 is better for the strip and given the availability, even cheaper to make stronger.
Ryan if your interested I have a 727 for sale. Would make a good core to get rebuilt.

I have a little more than 4k in my 727 swap and I did all the labor myself. Depends what parts you want.

SMR has a complete dakota swap kit for around 3200. I thought that was a good deal but I'm sure I can source the cross member and driveshaft on my own and be cheaper. They also sell the 727 as a kit and you build it yourself and the overdrive already assembled and it was a good price I thought. I haven't looked a whole lot but it seems to me the 727 is a better choice than a 46 re for price and function.

I've had my msaine built 46re and 2800 stall for a couple months now, thing is amazing, takes a beating and it doesn't even phase it. If you talk yourself out of the 727 the. If highly recommend his built 46re.
