    Default Dakota Panhard Bar/Trac Bar

I fabricated this panhard rod/trac bar set-up for one of the fellow Dakota guys with an R/T and 9.25 rear end. Even though the truck has leaf springs, under extreme side load, such as hard cornering, the axle still shifts from side-to-side. This set-up locks the axle in place and improves handling. I tested the prototype on my truck for several months of daily driving. It is definitely an improvement.

It mounts using existing holes in the frame. It is designed with clearance for the exhaust, a differential cover/girdle such as LPW...as well as the spare tire.

It also works well with the Hotchkiss TVS, the HiPotek X-brace…and traction bars.

Note: Shown with stainless steel hardware at additional expense to the customer.

A similar design by Maximum Motorsports for a Mustang reports the following benefits:
    • Improves stability during cornering.
    • Improves straight-line stability.
    • Improves handling predictability.
    • Fewer steering wheel corrections are needed to stay on line.
    • Helps keep car straight during a drag race launch.
    • Stops the Mustang's rear-steer tendency.
    • Lowers the rear roll center.
    • Simpler and therefore less expensive than a Watts linkage.

Seems like much further and you could just get rid of the leafs, put some chevelle, or G body kind of setup on it. It would be better though as the arms would point straight ahead though. Just need some spring mounts.

I'll see what I can dig up. Basically it fastens between the frame rails with the cross-brace up close to the bed. There is a spacer that goes between the passenger's side frame rail and cross-brace. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to get the cross-brace between the frame rails as one piece. The other bracket fastens to the axle housing with the panhard rod connecting from one side to the other.

Yes, there are a lot of possibilites for sure. I just wanted to put something together for the leaf spring trucks. I was planning this for my truck for some time. But since someone requested one, I decided to do it for mutual benefit.

I'll try this again...My posts are not showing up.

I have the shock mounts....Would this work, or a similar version if I ditched the Leafs and bought coil overs?

Sorry man. I've got to approve the posts and I haven't been at the computer.

Yes I think it might work, as long as you have coil overs to accept the load as well as something like caltracks or a 4-link to keep the axle from twisting under torque. Would have to give it some thought.

I'll get some pics posted on how things attach.

Thanks richard its great you do awesome work, im so glad i went through you to have this built up. im just waiting on the qa-1s to get this all installed, im sure this will work great along with the hotchkis and kenny brown xbrace. Next will be the brake upgrades, im considering entering the dakota in the spectre 341, ive already have a driver for it, but will be testing it at other events before hand once the brake issues a solved, it will not have the boosted motor in it yet, but i rather test with what i currently have.

I installed one on my truck last night so I'll get some picks and write up some install instructions.

    Thanks again!

I’m trying a slight variation on my truck. A few more shots of it. (I apologize for such a ratty lookin’ undercarriage but it’s too much fun driving it all the time. Lol.)

Note: the lowest v-shaped bar is a rear driveshaft loop and has nothing to do with the panhard bar.

Yours has a higher degree of adjustability. I tried reducing the depth of the frame mount but lost an inch of adjustability. If you look at the slot for the rod end on the driver’s side, you’ll see that yours has a longer slot (range of adjustment).

I’ll have the instructions finalized shortly and send them to you.

Received some customer feedback on another forum in regard to the HiPoTek panhard bar set-up. He took some vids of the outside of the truck during his track runs but it’s too hard to tell from that due to the body leaning one way and then the other during cornering. His comments:

It's hard to tell but it made a big difference, helped keep the suspension from binding and popping. Next event I'm going to put the camera under the truck to show how its working.
