Thread: New Idea for TOTQ

  1. #1

    Default New Idea for TOTQ

    Hey Ed,

I just saw something cool on powerstroke.org forum that makes it so EVERYONE has a chance to win, not just the guys who have spent an assload of cash on their trucks to make them tricked out rides.

They do a theme behind their truck of the month - so for example it could be best shot on the dyno, or best shot next to a river, or best shot at the pumpkin patch (for halloween), or best shot night shot, or best parking garage shot....etc and so on.

I dont know if you are interested in that but it sounded cool to me - I know I brought this up but its your baby now you make the decisions, lol.

Maybe in the future we can try it though....up to you.

    Todd

I think it would be fun - especially if you actually have to drive the truck to to the destination for the pics.

on the charger forums that is our photo contests. we have one every month with a theme. (no photoshoping allowed besides brightness/contrast and exposure)

we also have member of the month, not car of the month that is separate from the photo contest. we have had stock cars win.

members who win either contest get gift certificates to forum sponsored vendors. i dunno if our forum makes enough money to offer rewards and i don't know if we have a vendor that would sponsor a reward...

In general I'd say this is awesome. Unfortunately if you want to be realistic about it you realize A) there are hardly any new pictures posted on here anymore...probably because most of the people on this forum are here because they simply own the damn trucks but they don't move either out of the garage/storage, off jack stands, or they are waiting on Shady Dell. B) our community is so small there would be one truck for every month of the year and the following year would be those same trucks repeated because there are only a small amount of trucks/truck owners interested enough in driving their trucks to certain locations, let alone that care enough to take pictures while there...C) we don't have anybody motivated/enthusiastic enough to dedicate some time to something of this caliber. Another disappointing tidbit - How long has Kevin's truck been on the r/t page? How many hits does that page even get in a given month? There would be more interest if that shit actually changed once in a while and if people had more reasons to visit the main page/website rather than just the forums. I realize you're trying and the ball is rolling, even just seeing a thread such as this and the other couple of TOTQ-like threads in recent weeks is a step in the right direction so I'm glad. So don't take this the wrong way.

I'd volunteer to be in charge of something like this though. A) I drive my truck B) I enjoy taking random pictures of it, although I'm not a photographer nor do I have photoshop, but I still find it fun/interesting and I can appreciate when others post nice pictures of their trucks. I'd love to be able to sift through a bunch of member photos that are following a given theme for each month and be able to surprise the whole forum with which one is the 'winner'. Additionally, not everyone knows how to post pictures or host them online or whatever but I'd take the time to do that for them if they can e-mail me. I'd be willing to put effort into making this easier on people so we could potentially gather more interest. And C) I spend ample time on here to be enthusiastic and interactive. It is up to the rest to make it a success after that.

It's a fun and interesting idea, but it's my understanding that the reason it is Truck of the Quarter instead of Truck of the Month is because of the time commitment. Doing something like this would require another member to be in charge of it, so that it doesn't take more time away from the Execs and the things they do. Just my $.02...

I really like the idea of doing anything with the trucks other than keeping them as garage trophies or trailer queens. Besides, anything that helps motivate someone to roll their truck out and wash it it up for a pic would be a good thing.

Cool. That would mean a fun road-trip for me! It was still 109* yesterday, so to get actual "fall" colors I would have to drive to somewhere that's cooler. Sounds like fun!

Don't you have an engine to rebuild before you can do that?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. It's still in the mid 90's here. When Fall does get here it will be Winter, so we'll go from green to dead shit in about 1 week.

    I think that's a great idea Todd!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions so far.

First, I would to say that the DRTC TOTQ idea has been on the table for some time. Kevin's truck was posted up as an example of what it would look like on the website. It's been there for so long because the exec board has been busy with other club business (like planning the national meet among other things). We are moving forward with it now based on Todd's suggestion.
Since it's hosted on the main website, Todd is the one responsible for updating it, as he is the "site" webmaster. So I would like to thank him for stepping up and agreeing to do this for the club.
I have volunteered to help out on the forum to set it up, monitor nominations and voting, etc.

The whole idea behind TOTQ is to promote club members trucks and provide a venue for their work to be shown. Secondly, we want to promote the DRTC in general, increase membership, and increase the number of hits our main site gets.
As was mentioned, with the time commitment involved in setting this up, monitoring it, nominations and voting, I decided that once every 3 months would work better for both myself and Todd.

I realize that TOTQ leaves out a majority of our non-paying forum members from participating... I have heard the complaints.
I think the themed idea for TOTQ is great!
Even better,,, A themed photo contest (for lack of a better term) for everyone to get involved with, not just the paying club members.
    So I have some questions...
    1. Do you want to have a "separate" themed photo "contest" in addition to TOTQ?
    2. Or just have the TOTQ with a different theme each time?

    Ed -

A separate themed photo contest would be great to do IMO - never thought of that. And that would be a 'forum featured' truck vs. a main page site featured rig. The best part about it is the TOTQ could feature guys like yourself who have really put alot of time, $, blood, sweat and tears into their rigs. And the photo contest could be a once a month thing with a new theme each month that NON members could also participate in vs TOTQ having to be a member with a dakota r/t?

The rules are simple on the powerstroke forum (this would be for the photo contest):

Individual members nominate themselves by posting ONE pic based on the theme for that month. Then a poll is created to do vote on which ones are best. There should be ZERO comments posted in the nom thread if so they should be deleted, just the pics of the trucks so the forum members can view them to vote on them with out going through 20 pages of 'oh nice pic' 'oh nice truck' with one pic on each page.

And Jason (2k1amber) showed interest in moderating something like that - maybe you could give him mod priviledges to a new sub forum called 'monthly photo contest' and let him run it - I think he would do a good job with it.

    My .02

    Todd

    Thanks for the input Todd.

I agree with it being hosted on the forum vs. the main site.

And yes,,, this isn't something I have the time to run myself. So I would need help from someone.

Sounds like a good way to get ALL our members involved.

I'll post up on the exec board and talk it over.

I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say this; but being part of the club should be part of TOTQ. There shouldn't be a TOTQ for non paying members. The club pretty much stays broke these days and if you enjoy the site and want to have a chance at TOTQ, then you should kick in for it. Nothing is free in this World.
