So you both found it easier to install the short blocks first? I've been considering installing the intake manifold after, but thought I'd install the heads on the engine stand.

short blocks never came out. easier to describe that way i guess. Don's head had some fucked up valves, so they came off. and my truck i pull the heads to get ported

Definitely, I'll be back down there this weekend (I'm on spring break in Nova at the moment). I'll even have the fuel injector o-rings with me. Sorry I didn't respond to your last PM...I was busy and ended up forgetting about it. The past few weekends I've been busy as hell actually so I knew I wouldn't be able to get them down to you until this weekend at the very earliest. When do you plan on starting? I'm pretty much free every weekend so any time you need a hand you can just give me a shout I don't care if it's 6am or 10pm. You're only a few minutes down the street. Do you have/need a pushrod length checker? I can bring one of those down tomorrow as well...

That would be awesome. I ended up getting the O-rings at Napa, but could certainly use the pushrod checker, haven't gotten the cam installed yet but need to get around to it. Need to finish up the heads, got some new stones at grainger. This week has been super busy at work, and home work, house work, family etc. I just haven't gotten out there at all since last Saturday. I took some days off a week from now, I'm hoping to have it installed and running.

I got my rear o2 issue sorted out. Finally got a bung welded to the exhaust so I don't need to keep the sensor on the frame rail anymore. (last one shorted out after two years) CEL is off.

So now that that is done, I shouldn't have anything to do next weekend.

BryanRT360

well got mine running on saturday. fucking water pump leaked, so i swapped the gasket(hot, took only 20 min)

dons is almost running. he wanted to hide some wire and reroute some hose's. plus he didn't have a serpentine belt. he is probably an hour front fire up.

on the way back from Don's, My low pressure power steering line blew off the pump. sprayed that shit all over. I had to call don to drive 40 miles one way to bring me one stinkin hose clamp. tightened up the clamp and was one my way.

I also developed a exhaust leak off my header. I not going say any names, but I was under the truck bolting up the collectors so I dunno what happened there.:jester:

no, it was my side :bs:

I think the deal with those is that they're just too thin. It seems any kind of torque at all will cause them to twist. I'm going to just keep using the spintech ones, the extra beef seems to help.

2k1AmberR/T
03-23-2010, 01:29 PM
I wasn't a huge fan of the thin ones either FWIW.

I wasn't a huge fan of the thin ones either FWIW.

My thin plate on the driver's side held up just fine all last summer

I think we can all go back and forth on this nonstop...time to have a batch of steel plates made up.

2k1AmberR/T
03-23-2010, 02:57 PM
My drivers side is fine, too! (after doing it twice). I just need to fix the passenger side now. Spintechs were worry free for 6 years after one install, without even a re-torque on the bolts.

sunike32
03-23-2010, 03:35 PM
I agree with what Don has stated before...had Spintech/GSM provided longer hardware right from the get go (or had the previous owner used said hardware) then the original plates would have lasted with no problem.

You ended up using one of Todd's plates on the driver's side, didn't you?

BryanRT360
03-23-2010, 07:35 PM
I thought my last set warped because i was using a remflex gasket behind the plates to the head. That never ever leaked, but I thought it bent the plates cause the gaskets crush up to 50%. this time just RTV on the plates and they warped the same exact way. (center ports only) fuck it both sides are leak free now.

next time i'll grap a set of spintech plates and be good to go. we torqued the shit out the bolts on don's spintech plates. not once did I feel I would pull some threads.

sunike32
03-23-2010, 09:38 PM
That, that just proves that the proper hardware makes all the difference with the Spintech plates.

03-25-2010, 01:33 AM
OK, my shit busted...again....bad :bs::jerkit:

I barely cranked it, and it fired right up. It settled into a nice lumpy idle right away. So I start topping off the coolant. After about a minute, I hear a loud PING and it stopped dead. It restarted easily, but with a loud rod knock, WTF !?!?! I had to take my daughter to softball, so I let it cool down. It never even reached the 1/2 way point on the temp guage. So, I don't think it overheated. Anyway, I started it again, once I came back. It started easily, and the knock was much quieter, but still there. It also had a new problem, one cylinder was dead. I started pulling plug wires and it looks like # 6 is the problem child. There's also oil smoke coming from the exhaust now too. I'm thinking bad wrist pin or rod bolt. Either way, that block is junk now. 3 frigging minutes, that has to be a record.

On the bright side, it sounded like a beast when it was running. And, it seems my oil pump mod worked like a champ. I have 40 Lbs of pressure @ idle, and 70+ Lbs once the rpms start to climb. I don't think it was anything Bryan or I did that caused the failure. It's just my shitty luck. The dealer has agreeed to put another short block in it. I'm going to tear all the vroom vroom parts off tomorrow, and have it towed up there.

I learned a lot about proper torqueing working with Bryan this time. I think I'll have them just pop in another short block this time, and I'll finish the build with Bryan. I know that they won't be anywhere near as thorough as Bryan & I were. Anyone think I can reuse my ARP head bolts, or should I get new ones ?

I tell you guys, it was the best of times and the worst of times. All in the span of about 5 minutes. It fealt like someone punched me in the gut, no lie. I WILL be ready for Carlisle though, even if it kills me :woot::burnout:

If the past is any indication, It should take them 2 or 3 weeks to get the shortblock in & installed. I'm going to talk to the today about me doing from the heads up. As long as their going to stand behind things, I'm ok with it. Disappointed, sure, but it could be worse. The thing that kills me is that there's another 2=300 dollar in gaskets & hardware I'll have to re-buy.Shit like this test my dedication to the project, but I'm NOT giving up. Tore it down today, sort of. I took my headers and all the bling stuff off, as I have in the past, so the dealer tech wouldn't have to worry about damaging them. What I found was my exhaust rocker off to the side of the valve on Cyl. 4, WTF ? I pulled all the rockers and studs out, as I'll do the final adjustments. I don't expect the dealer dude to do that. What I found was that the exhaust valve on # 4 partially compressed, and stuck. I couldn't get it to come back up. The lock and retainer is still there & fine. So, my guess is bad rod bolt or wrist pin, and that the piston continued up far enough to bend the valve.

It was really sad to see Platinum up on the flat bed, yet again, pulling away from my house. :bs:Spoke to the dealer, they'll tear it down next week and order a new short block. My machine shop guy, who did the heads, is ready to fix the damage. Hopefully, it'll just be a bad valve and valve guide. I really want to be the one to finish the assembly, I think Bryan and I will do a far better job. I'm going to ask them to just drop the shortblock in, and I'll finish it from there. Bad news is I'll probably need to pop another $500 deductible. Maybe not, we'll see how that turns out. Good news is that I should only need to buy intake and head gaskets. ARP said no problem with re-using my head bolts. I did see a big problem with the block, while I was working on it today. There was a huge yellow mopar sticker on it that said, remanufactured in Mexico. !?!?!? Fuck me, fuckin beaners !!!!! :bs::bs::bs::bs::bs::jerkit:

I doubt they'll do that, although I agree. I don't think I'll be able to get them to give it back to me with the heads off either. I'll probably let bolt the head down with shitty stock gaskets & bolts, then just bring it home and pop 'em back off to put the ARPs and 1008s back on.
