you should get it wrapped in alcantara.

I bought a new factory one a while back, cost wasn't too bad.

I have an '08 Honda Civic Si (sedan). The interior upholstery is all alcantara, I'm NOT impressed with how it wears. I only have 14k miles on it, and already wear patterns are starting to show in the driver's seat and door panels. Others who have an Si have told me to expect the alcantara to be pretty much 'shot' at 50k to 60k miles. I do love the way it 'sticks' your butt in the seats in hard cornering---no sliding in the seat whatsoever.

Whole new wheel or is it a factory leather cover replacement kit ??

It is a new wheel. You swap the airback, steering wheel controls and back cover onto it.

I'm thinking about getting mine redone to look something like these...

The factory leather wheel in my 02' R/T looks like poo and it only has 38k miles. The one in my 00' Durango with 90k miles looks like new. Go figure

I'm thinking that age has as much to do with this problem as actual wear; Blue with 30,000 some thousand mi is starting to "feel" like its going bad....
I'm curious if new original wheels will hold up any better?

Mine's wasted too and I'd love to have it redone, or buy a new one. I bought a non leather wrapped wheel to use while my original gets redone, if that's what it takes.
Steve mentioned that Phoenix Imaging will re-wrap the original wheel, but I haven't checked it out. They're more or less local to me.

if you do, be sure to let us know. i don't mind the factory job, but another option with another material may be interesting. doesn't much matter to me, so long as it stops crumbling in my hands.

Wyckoff lists the leather wrapped steering wheel without radio controls for $230 and with radio controls for $200 (don't know why they are cheaper with radio controls)

You guys need to make some friends with people who work at dealerships. :jester:

200 is out of hand. The one I got did not come with new radio buttons, I switched mine onto it. Perhaps there is a PN for just the wheel frame and leather that is different than the one wackoff has.

I have a brother who works at the local dodge dealership. My spare key costed me 9cents. I'm also looking for a steering wheel, my stitching is opening up like a broken zipper. He quoted me 240 retail for a new one. I don't know how much he discounts me, but I gotta say, it's pretty nice.

Pete,
Have you checked with any local upholstery shops to see if they re-cover steering wheels? I would think the hardest part would be finding someone that does it. Shouldn't be all that expensive, I wouldn't think. Sure as hell wouldn't take much material! Just a thought.

Very true, you'd think it could be done using scrap material that couldn't be used other wise also.

You guys jinxed me, on the way home from NATs the part of the wheel I hold got a small tear which caused a section to delaminate and crinkle up. It is the begining of the end.

I kept my original wheel, the PO must have drove like a gansta cause only the top was worn, my newer one is now worn at 9 and 3. Between the two I have a decent wheel, but I'm scared to de-lace it to try and patch a new one together.

A guy that I know who bought some of Phoenix Imaging equipment hydrographics etc. recovers the steering wheels. I would like to get mine done. I can find out a price if anyone is really interested.

I would like one like sincitys old one but in intense blue. Or maybe something else.

My main question is how are the "sections" held to eachother? It's easy to see how they are laced to the wheel. I just need to take the top section from my new wheel and put it on my old wheel to have a good one.

Maybe I can play around with changing the stitching color for shiggles.

Bumping this thread, dont shoot me guys :jester:! Anyone find out where to get this done or how to do it? Mine is totally shot and I wanna replace it. I want the factory look, but with red stitching....

Thinking about taking my factory wrap off and put on a black wheel skin, but I'm thinking that might be too big...

Ideas?

Damn 350....

Its not on the top of my priority list so I'll have to skip it if its that much. Im gonna try to do it myself for now with a wheel skin i guess. Wanted to keep it local, but I guess thats outta the question.

The top and bottom leather on mine was wore out since I bought it with 48k miles. I just unstiched the top and bottom of mine and it's getting dipped in snakeskin within the next few days. The sides and the rest of mine weren't bad enough to have to get those parts re-done.

I just found this place today! I'm going to have them rewrap my GTO steering wheel and give it a flat bottom and add bolsters to the steering wheel.hit him up and ask what he can do with the dakota wheel. His quality looks top notch and a GTO guy on the forums said its great. He can wrap anything.

it looks like a quality job but that is even more expensive. For a challenger steering wheel its 500 plus a 300 core that's refundable. So am I reading this wrong or is it really 800 up front?

RiG
03-11-2011, 04:19 PM
From what I heard from the GTO guy is that it was 300 to do up his steering wheel. I think the core is taken off the 500.send him and email and ask him how much to cover a dakota wheel, all the wheels are priced differently

i gotta see someone do steering wheel leather. $300 better be for about 10 hours of labor, or the cost of some fancy ass machine amortized into customer invoices. that shit's ridiculous. It's a square foot of leather!

Hand wrapped leather steering wheels are expensive. How much does the dealer want for a new wheel? The GTO HSV steering wheel is almost 600 bucks for a OEM GM piece. Before you ASSume that its 800 bucks for your wheel, call or email them and ask. Or ask around to a local shop and see what they would charge? IF they can recover your wheel, they wont add bolsters or do anything real crazy.

I never had a problem with mine, but I always cleaned it with leather cleaner and then put some leather preservative on it. I'm glad that I did that, since I am stunned at the prices that are being quoted here for a re-wrap. I would think if you found a local mom and pop shop that they would be reasonable for such a trivial job.

would anyone be interested?

About three hours after I bought my R/T I was totally sick of how the steering wheel felt. The first thing I ever did to the truck was change the oil, and the second thing I did was get a wheel cover for it. The wheel cover I got has the Ram logo (the goat) and says RAM on it. I wish it said DODGE instead, but it was like $12 and feels really awesome once you get used to having the larger-diameter steering wheel. The larger rim makes it feel more modern, if anything, because that's been the trend in recent years. I'd prefer to have the stock wheel re-wrapped, but even the cheapest job would be too much effort for the return, to me.
