View Full Version : Synthetic BLOWS!

My truck just hit 50k, so I decided to go synthetic. I used 10-30 Royal Purple, and a Bosch filter (best filter I could find). I read on here that Fram sucks, so I switched. I can definitely notice some power loss........WTF!?

Man, if you knew what bearing clearances came on these engines. Noone would run 10w-30. Just not needed. Not even Phoenix. It's too thick. As far as the Bosch filter, there's a balance between good filtration AND good flow through the filter. There may be something to that and the oil weight. I've run RP for a couple oil changes back to back...IT CLEANS THE HELL OUT OF THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE! Never seen an additive package that cleans that well...and that was after me running Mobil 1 5w-30 for a couple years. Even got a couple stuck lifter plungers from running it. It was cleaning the crust the Mobil 1 couldn't budge that was there from previous vehicle leasor.

So what weight are you recommending?

Is that all you did? Just the oil and filter change?

That's all I did. I usually use fram filters, so it could be the flow, or like he said, the weight of the oil.

What weight would you recommend? I noticed the guy on the thread I read had 75k and everyone recommended 10-30. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference with me having 25k less. So mobil1 filters are good?

Well with .0015 bearing clearance 10w-30 would be MAX. (That's a tight clearance for the 2.8~" mains we have. The factory says the service limit on the main bearings are .0022. If you have 150k miles plus maybe...consider 10w-30. Every engine will be different though.
5w-30 conventional would be the thickest, and syn will be thinner at the same temp and weight. Joe Gibbs oil recommends 5w-20 for our clearance and "typical" oil temp. I concur with this. My 408 has .003 main clearance and did well on conventinol O'reilly 5w-30. Made 2hp more on engine dyno when I switched to Mobil 1 of same weight. I'd guess a tighter stockish engine will benefit more. Hp doesn't make me buy syn, I look at it more as insurance and can't hurt.
Wix/Napa Gold and purolator filters are good.

I have never heard of such a thing just from an oil and filter change, but I don't claim to know everything.
I run Castrol10w30 here in Texas, but I use the Mopar oil filter. I used to run Mobil 1 10w30 and have never felt a noticeable difference, one way or another.
As for Royal Purple, I used to lease to a Corvette shop that tried to sell me on it. He said he'd let me do an oil change at the track and if I didn't pick up a solid 2/10, there'd be no charge. I didn't go for it, because I don't want to get hooked on $5 per qt. oil.

If you saw the motor I used in my truck that was run on nothing but RP for 50K miles you'd change your mind. When i dropped it in, there was a dark purple film coating everything inside the motor even the dipstick to where you couldn't read the fill marks. The first couple oil changes after I dropped it in running Mobil1 came out black, then it was clear after that. The original motor from my '99 with 120K miles, the last 100K of that with Mobil1 was spotless inside and still had the factory crosshtaching on the cylinders and very very minimal wear on the cam/crank/rod bearings compared to some 5.9s I've seen torn down with less miles.

All I know is I typically run Mobil 1 5w-30. A couple of oil changes I tried the Royal Purple of same weight, that's when I had lifter problems. I pulled the intake again after just doing it a few months before to check out the lifters. Now I was looking at lifter plungers that were stuck. Used a pushrod to tap and break them free. Then pumped on them and bits of black carbon looking crap came out. The lifter valley was "quite noticeably" cleaner. Before, on the 2bbl m1 swap and before that the ported Kegger, I was careful to not disturb the crust of crap that was up where the head and deck meet. It was now almost gone. That's why I came to the conclusion the detergent package in the RP must be more agressive than the Mobil 1.
Yeah, I don't know. I've only ever ran Mobil1 in my truck and never had any build up anywhere from it. Will soon be switching to a custom blended oil in both my truck and the car.

thats odd... royal purple pours out of the quart purple but turns clear when it gets used... it comes out looking like any other synth oil when i drain it, and its not purple when i check my dipstick after its run a bit.

That's cause all the dye stays in your motor. :jester:

i have used 10w-30 Royal in every one of my cars. never had a problem. My 84 chevy was burning Mobil 1 like crazy on a fresh build swithed to RP and perfect!. I would say its not the oil that slowed your truck down gotta be something else

I've been more than pleased with my mobile 1 synthetic for 70k+ miles. I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with it myself, then again I can't say whether or not it has gone down hill in recent years either.

yea that was awesome, i did that deal right before i put my car away for the winter. still had to buy an extra 2 quarts for this big ass hemi tho...
the filter looks to be the same as a mobil1 champion labs filter. at least its one of the good champion labs filters. some of their newer ones aren't that great.

Oops..i meant 39.99...so the filter is free. And yea...looks just like mobil 1 filter to me too.
Even use it to flush coolant..
