View Full Version : Custom Sub Box Build Progress

Started out the build today since I have to make room for the roll bar. I am trying to keep it as light as possible so I am only doing the box part as a complete top. I will have an upholstery shop make a 1/4 face plate and top that is wrapped in leather to match the back seat and front seats, and that will also fit around the roll bar and hide all the welds. I am thinking of either putting the Amp in the middle or the right. Leaning toward the right with some embroidery in the middle. Thinking of just a big R/T in the middle. I am just going to run two wood bars across to mount the amp thus allowing it to cool and reduce weight. I thought of putting a fire extinguisher behind the driver side but I am just going to mount it to the bar behind me.
If anyone wants some of these templates let me know and I can trace them for you. I am going to fiberglass the bottom of the sub box. But first I have to tape everything off and them put some foil down so that it comes right back up. Did it in a CRX back in 96 and it came out really well and it sounded good. This box is 13Hx15Wx(average 6-7)D giving me a volume of about .70. Perfect for my JL W1v2-4.
Feel free to comment give advise or tell me it sucks, haha.
Dynamat across the back, did not go overkill, just to make it sound right.

Had Home depot cut the boards to the right sizes for most part, used a jig saw for most everything else.

Cut the seatbelt tabs off to make room. Going to have to put something on the back to make the seat lean on the back wall.

Speaker in its place. Still need to assemble the box, but it all fits well enough. Fiberglass will fill in the spots that have a little bit of space. Would of put it together but I forgot to get 2 inch drywall screws.

Space between the back seat and the top of the speaker box. About a 1/4 inch if not a little more. Good for a tight fit when the shop makes a top for it.

Looks good!
If you want, draw a sketch of the box with the dimensions, scan and email it to me. I can draw it in AutoCAD and create 1:1 copies or scaled copies of the plans.
Plus, I would like to hold on to them for the future! lol

I can do that, Funny thing is that with the same dimensions I could make the other side for another sub pretty easily. Problem is that the sizes are all bigger than 11 inches for a regular size paper.

Haha, I see what you're point is. I think all he needs is a rough sketch with the dimensions written in, then he can draw it to scale in AutoCAD, etc...

Can you do it off pictures of the actual product if I give you the dimensions?

Hey, I was wondering if you could email me some of those scans and possibly some instructions, I just want to install one 12 by the way. Thanks:biggthumpup:

I will get it to the other member so that he can do a PDF and go from there.
Instructions are just cut the peices out, predrill holes then use 2 inch drywall screws to put everything else. Fiberglass the bottom then put the box on and more fiberglass on the bottom to make it more sturdy. Put the top on after you cut the hole out for the sub. 12's require a lot more air space. I dont think this would work unless you extended the box out more toward the walls. I didn't cause a Rollbar needs to go there.

Funny you posted this. I looked for that roll of stuff at my parent's house tonight. It's MIA. Sorry. I'd put a solid layer back there, but that's just my experience with that stuff. Little bit like that really doesn't seem to make any difference.

If I put a solid layer on then I would cover all the holes, Don't want to cut all the little holes out again. It killed the vibration pretty good. I used the tap tap tap method, haha. It sounded fine before so it should just sound better now. If not oh well, I have a shit load left. My co-worker had it in his basement. Like 3 full sheets. I have like 2 sheets left.

Yeah, my dad's friend told me a 10 incher would be better for under the seat and now i believe him. I heard some guy say the sound better facing down? Is that normal or no.

So far without the top its 12 lbs. I think it will be about 30 lbs with the sub and amp when all is said and done.

Top with the hole cut out for the speaker. 9 Inch hole. Still need to drill that onto the box, but need to do the fiberglass bottom first. Then I can drill it permanently. Next will be wiring first.

I did the fiberglass bottom today. Good thing is was a warm day and I could leave the garage open to vent the smell out. This stuff stinks.
I put down some foil to prevent it from sticking to the body. Tape is a guide where the box fits, kind of. That way I dont go all crazy with it.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d197/Davidsalazar03/Truck/CIMG2352.jpg
Cut out some fiberglass mat to put on the bottom of the box and resin in.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d197/Davidsalazar03/Truck/CIMG2351.jpg
Then I put down the resin and mat. Did one layer before I even put the box down so that it could fill any holes that the box might of left around the body lines.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d197/Davidsalazar03/Truck/CIMG2355.jpg
And after about 6 players of mat and resin. Also did some silicone sealant on the corners to seal the box.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d197/Davidsalazar03/Truck/CIMG2359.jpg
Once it is all dry, (tomorrow) I will put the top on and seal the top. Then I can put the sub in permanently. I also have to wait for the line out converter to show up to finish the wiring.

Well everything dried up and the wife went shopping, so I had time to go and finish this thing. Can't fire it up because I don't have the Lineout converter yet. Probably Tuesday. All the wires are run and hooked up except the remote, and the line out speaker wires. I am also waiting on my adapters for my rear speakers. Can't get the roll bar right now cause I blew a shit ton a money on the service for my Jetta so it will sit like this until I either sell some shit sitting around in the garage or I sell the motorcycle. For those that think its really heavy its not. With everything it weighs 40 lbs. The Thunderform was 38 lbs, add in the seatbelts and restraint tabs and its 43 lbs, add in the rear seat bottoms and its about 46 lbs total. So overall I am going to about breakeven and I have room to put the bar in.

Im just gonna come in and say that looks pretty cool. The other thing is that you shouldnt need any dynomat for just one sub. I have 2 kicker L5 12's in a 6.0 cubed vented box tuned to 32hertz and nothing rattles in my cc. The only thing that rattles is cans in my cup holders and my overhead display. Are you not gonna have a back seat? Or are you keeping the long part of the back seat and taking the little one out? I took my long back seat out and put the box there and kept my small seat so I can still have a passenger sit back there to blow their ear drums. LOL Heres my setup.

Wow that is overkill. I could not stand driving around with that much bass. I did this really to make room on the sides to put in a roll bar for the race track. I am not putting any seats back there since you can't get back there with a roll bar. Just going to be a nice upholstered top and front with some nice embroidery. You will see the sub and the amp and that is it, everything else will be hidden.

Nah not overkill. Just custom. I guess I didnt read you was putting in a roll bar. Thats cool and a cool setup. Mines a dd. And you can never have too much bass. When your as old as I am your hearing gets worse so you need to get LOUDER!!! LOL Plus you wouldnt do that good at the strip with a heavy ass box like mine in your back seat. It weighs a freakin ton.

Not much change, but I had to notch the back of the box after the roll bar install.

Got most of the interior back in and took it to someone else to finish it up. I could not get the rear panels in so I had a pro do it for me. He is also making some panels up that will cover the sub box.
