View Full Version : Data logging on the cheap

Is there a cheap data logger that I can get to record the basics that I would need to get a better tune?
The dyno itself has a wide band 02, which is how it was tuned before. That and hit/miss timing adjustments. I want to get some real-time info, so the tuner will actually have something to go on, instead of basically shooting in the dark.
I just don't have a lot of extra dough to spend.
What about borrowing/renting one? Anyone have one they're not using at the moment? I could pay some $ and shipping both ways, then use it for a week or two, then send it right back.

I live not too far from you, and my LM-1 setup will be here this week. Give me a few days to get my tune right and I'm sure we can work something out.

Cool! I'd be glad to pay you, so you can make some $ back on your investment.

What do you want to log besides AFR? It sounds like you need something that will log OBDII info in real time. Does your tuner not have something that will do that? The local guy out here that does SCT Dodge stuff uses one of the Modis scanners. There's a guy over on dak-dur that just got one of the Innovate OT-1 setups. It logs 16 OBDII channels 12 times/second supposidly. $150 for the unit.

I just got the OT-1 and for $150 it does a good job, the set up was a PITA but its working now and gives you lots of options.

Maybe we can work something out on a DS loop.

Whatever I can get. If it's tunable through the SCT, I wanna know what it's doing.

Alan,
How are you going to do your tune? Do you have someone that is going to do it as you feed them info, or are you going to do it?

Explain "setup was a pain in the ass" part please.
I'm not that talented with electronics, so it's anyones guess if I'd get an easy install done properly, much less a difficult one.

Turns out that the tuner has an a/f logging device, so yours wouldn't do me much good unless I wanted to tune it myself, which I don't. I'd rather that someone else tune it for me.
The guy that tuned on mine originally had never tuned a Dodge Dakota before, but he said he's done 3 more since then and he wants to see if he can get me a better tune now that he knows more about it. I'm going over there this afternoon, so we'll see what happens.

Well, he was too busy to actually tune on mine today, so he showed me how to add/take away fuel and spark. As long as I save the file under a new name, I can always go back a reload the tune I have now. Now I have to decide if I really wanna mess with it (or, it up) that bad.

It probably wasn't as bad as I thought it was it was -15 F while I was working on it and I was using a crappy laptop! My problems were mostly software related, the hook up is very easy, just follow the instructions . It requires no electronic skills. There were son com port issues, but there are som good articles on innovative's web site, now. I have linited hardware knowladge of computers and no understaning of software an dI was able to do it, so for anyone under 40 it should be a piece of cake.
