View Full Version : Rear Main Seal?

My 2000 r/t been sitting un-driven since november, however it is slowly dripping oil from the back of the engine/ front of the transmission area. Im just wondering if it is a possibility that the rear main seal could be leaking if it hasn't been driven in a while.
In addition to that I believe the crank seal is also leaking because there has been a few drips coming from that area. Anyone have an idea of how much it will cost me to get these things fixed?
Thanks,
Ben

I just bought a new rear main seal fom NAPA for $26.04... You have to pull the oil pan to get to it. Which involves lifting the motor and tranny. Turns out it was the oil pan gasket leaking all along. So back to NAPA for a $30 oil pan gasket. It was a bitch!
Check the obvious places first... Run your fingers around the back of the valve cover gaskets and along the back side of the intake manifold, by the dist. and oil sending unit. If it's dry check where the back of the heads meet the block. If that's dry then it's either rear main seal or pan gasket leaking.
If your talking about the front seal, that involves taking the timing chain cover/water pump/fan off. You'll be removing overflow tank/rad. shroud, crank pulley/harmonic balancer, hoses, belt, draining water, etc.
A competent mechanic should be able to it in one long day.

So, it can be done without seperating the tranny from the engine?

Yep... You have to remove the tranny cross member, the lift 'em both together. And of course, take the dist. out along with some odds and ends.

Why would the dist. have to come out?

Well it wouldn't allow you lift the engine high enough to get the pan out.
We had the engine against the firewall and barely had enough room to get the pan off.

hmmm that sounds like a bitch. If i'm that far into it i'd pull the motor and rebuild it. But i have a tendency to overdo some projects.

Problem was,, I had JUST rebuilt it the week before. We had it down to the bare block, every nut and bolt was out.
Put it together and installed it,,then found the oil leak after I started it:mad:
Turned out the pan gasket was fubarred, so this was actually a little easier to do than pull the motor completely out again.

You can always use the dye and a uv light to see where the leak is coming from. I believe the service manual will tell you to pull the inspection cover on the trans and look for oil splattered around the bell housing of the trans. This is usually a sign of the rear main seal.
I thought mine was leaking before the nats last year, turns out had a bad tc (it was leaking through the input shaft area)
