View Full Version : Gauges, full sweep vs. 90* sweep

Ok, so I'm gonna install a couple more gauges, oil pressure and trans temp. I'm wondering if I really need the extra accuracy of full sweep gauges? Considering that the price difference between the two for both oil and trans temp is about $250. Anyone running 90* sweep gauges? How are they working out for you? Wishing you had gone full sweep? I think the 90* sweep would be ok for trans temp, but I'd kinda like the extra accuracy for oil pressure.
What kind of oil pressure should we be seeing at idle, part throttle and WOT?
This is the 90* sweep gauge:

personally I went with full sweep because I think they look better than the 90's. Dont know anything about the oil pressure

I'm partial to the full sweep. I don't like seeing empty space :p

Looks are secondary, I just want them to be able to tell me what I need to know :)

i prefer the full sweeps but 90's are fine.

seems like the full sweep would give you a more accurate gauge on it....just having more points to look at....

Yeah, definitely more accurate. Just wondering if they're worth the extra $250. Plus I gotta spend $200 on a nitrous gauge. $550 on damn gauges. It's all the lil stuff that gets ya LOL

holy crap! you gettin a electric n2o gauge? i dont know that i could spend 500 on gauges.....i havent bought anything for my truck over 350 bucks....at one time....lol I just hope i can get my truck back sometime, insurance companies suck!

I guess I could just put a gauge on the bottles, but I was thinking it would be nice to have it in the cab, and yeah the electric is $200. And then if you add in the wideband O2 and fuel pressure gauge that I already have, there's a lot of money in gauges LOL I'll sell off my boost gauge and make a lil back, but not much.
Altho, I'd venture to guess that Rob Rohe still has more money tied up in his gauges :jester:

ebay has them pretty cheap. I accidently wired my fuel pressure gauge wrong and burnt out the led. I know your not supposed to get a waranty when you buy stuff of ebay but when autometer asked I told them I dont have a recipt because it was a gift. They told me to send it in and they would look at it. I didnt hear back from them for a about two weeks so I called and they decided to just send me a new one. So what Im really trying to say is they have really good customer support.

My Melling HV pump shows just under 40 at idle... As soon as I come off idle, it jumps to around 80 psi. There is no in between.
I think my stock pump maxed out around 70 psi IIRC.
Both sweeps read accurate,, but a full sweep gives more numbers to look at, so it's easier to tell exactly where your at.

Thanks Ed, good info.
This is what kills me, I can go digital and get both the oil and trans temp for about half the price of the analog gauges, but then the digital nitrous gauge is $20 more than the analog, wtf? Crazy.

I'm working on it! :) Hoping to snag the nitrous gauge on e-bay, then maybe go full sweep on the oil pressure and 90* on the trans temp.
What kind of temp range do we want to see for the trans?

I like things simple, don't need fancy gauges :) I have a two gauge pod, and a spot for one gauge in the console. I'll probably put the nitrous gauge in the console, since it's right next to the switches. Wideband and fuel pressure in the pod, then maybe a pod under the dash for the oil pressure and trans temp. I'll have a shift light mounted on the column for manually shifting, don't want an aftermarket tach.

That pic of your cockpit always cracks me up, that's fucking crazy man! The gauge you have in the middle of your pillar pod isn't as bright tho :nana:
The nitrous gauge I'm hoping to snag off of e-bay is a Sport Comp II.

yeah, that one in the middle is the WBC. i've got and array style LED in it, but it just doesn't light up as well as the others. i want the Autometer WB guage to match the others.

Are you using the mechanical or electric on the oil pressure guage ?
And is it ok to run a mechanical oil press. guage in the cab ?
Will a Tech at a track bust you on Inspection .
Any failures ?

Mechanical oil pressure gauge inside the cab is OK, long as the oil line isn't plastic or nylon. Mine is copper.

Copper it will be .
I could see the nylon failing 200 miles away from the house ,oil every were inside the cab , not to mention getting burned from HOT oil .

As mentioned, you can, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't have any mechanical gauges in the cab, but that's just me. I don't have my rule book with me, but I believe that you're not allowed to have mechanical gauges in the cab.

Gotta hunt down the oil pressure and trans temp and I'll be good to go.

FYI: Here's the rule...
General Regs...Page 65... Section 1:9 Oil System.
"Oil pressure gauge and line permitted in driver compartment, metal or steel braided line mandatory,Maximum 3/16" inside diameter.
