I think most of the boosted trucks with intercoolers (other than the procharger kit) are primarily used for drag racing which is why the owners chose an air to water intercooler rather than air to air.

Turbo's are expensive so don't compare the costs to a supercharger as they are way more by the time you custom install everything.
I run an air ro air intercooler in my set-up.
I am running an air to air inter cooler with my turbo set up.

I'm running air/water with mine because I need all the cooling I can get here in AZ. It's hard to pull much heat out of the charge air if the air blowing thru the air/air intercooler is already 100°.
If you could mount a large enough air/air in the truck and get enough air into it, you could get it into the 60% efficiency range. That would mean that on a 100° day, 12 psi of boost would still make an IAT of 170°.

I built the manifold for the turbo which mounts it on the passenger side, with a crossover from a Kenne Bell header on the driver side.

This pic also shows the air/water intercooler. It's all crude but effective.
