View Full Version : New Best 10.74 @ 127.92 mph!

I have an Arizona's Fastest Street Car race tomorrow night, where I'll be trying to run on an 11.50 dial - but I couldn't resist going out tonight to see if I could possibly whittle away at the ET a little bit more. Since it managed to run a 10.97 in the noon day sun last weekend, I had a sneaking suspicion it would go a little bit quicker in better conditions.
The first pass was an 11.28 @ 123.85 mph with a 1.84 60' - but it was still hot out and the track was loosy-goosy all the way down.
I let it cool off for about about an hour and a half, and the sun went down - so I tried it again. This time it went an 11.03 @ 124.43 mph, with a 1.67 60'. The track was better, but it still "danced" a whole bunch in 1st and 2nd.
Then of course like always - somebody oiled the track down. It took them about an hour to clean it up - then there was a huge backup of cars in the staging lanes. Rather than start and stop the truck or try and push it uphill in the staging lanes, I went to the stands and watched for quite a while. Once it started to thin out, I went to the staging lanes. By now it's 11:00 pm and down to 85° ambient temps. Warmer than I thought it would be, but way better than it was. I was rewarded for my patience tonight with a new best pass of 10.74 @ 127.92 mph on a 1.60 60'.
And for those of you paying attention at home - I added 2 more psi of boost when I shifted into 3rd. KJ made me turn it up! LOL I think on a good track, 12psi of boost would net a pretty good timeslip, but I don't think Firebird would hold it in 1st and 2nd tonight. But it felt just fine in 3rd!
Maybe tomorrow if I get put out early, I can try a full pass on 12 psi. Speedworld preps the track WAY better than Firebird does.
Maybe it will stick?

I was just wondering how the psi for each gear thing works. How does the wastegate know how much boost to bleed off for each gear. Just want to understand. Thanks.

The wastegate is just a big valve that bleeds off exhaust pressure to keep the turbo from overspeeding. With a boost controller you can change the boost pressure. I can change from one setting to another on the fly, so I changed it when I hit 3rd this time.

I need to make friends with somebody that owns a video camera.
I think I know what it's doing while going down the track, but it would be nice to be able to see what it's doing.
I really want to get an in-cab video system. I think it would really be amusing to hear what people would have to say when they saw how much "driving" has to be done on a slippery track. LOTS of steering input required to keep it down the middle. But then again, that extra adrenalin rush is part of what makes it fun!

The runners/ports on the 2bbl M1 are probably my restriction on the intake side. My single 3" full exhaust system would be the cork in the other side. I know there's more in it.... but the money tree fails to grow.

Our DA does suck, but I'm running on new internals now. I knew the stock parts would go away if I kept pushing them. Now it's all forged with internal balance. With the new heads on the combo - I'm having to sneak up on the tune to make sure I don't hurt anything.

Nothing too fancy. I run a 409 (splayed 4 bolt with short fill of hard block) at 9.5 compression and R/T cast heads (KRC ported). M1 4 bbl with 58mm F&B and 60# injectors. Most of the speed comes from running a bigger cam (shift at 6500) and the ability to tune it with the BigStuff3. Supercharger ia a S-trim at 8#s of boost thru a Bell intercooler and alcohol injection.
Pump gas.

It boils down by the looks of it our stock fuel injection equipment even with sct is a hold back. 8 lbs of boost? shit I am seeing 10 psi which I try to stay away from. I still have to tune it, will be harrassing you soon on that. Dan

Just a B&G flash, not even a blower flash, just a normal flash, and an MSD boost timing master. Basically a time bomb if Im off with my settings. When I cobbled together my combo I was shooting for 10.7s. So I havent hit my goal yet. Hey Dave, Whats going on? Did you get to run your new combo yet? I seriously doubt Im going to Carlisle. Im not much for traveling around. I would love to meet at Atco. We are actually setting up a rental for the fall this week. Would you be interested in going? I was thinking of holding a Dakota meet there also. I can rent the track and it would be Dakotas only. I actually dont have to do it, anyone could. Its $2000 for the rental, and I think a 10 or 12 car max. You cant run dial ins either due to insurance regulations. But it is still fun.
To answer the other question, I pretty much only run at Rentals. Then I dont get thrown out. I made 18 passes under 11.50 last time I went and no one made a peep about it.
My intercooler is way undersized also, so I usually only race in the fall.

I would definitely be down for an Atco rental, since I don't have a rollbar either, and probably won't have one by then. I should have mine running in the next couple weeks, finishing up the fuel system now and then just waiting on my hydroboost to come back from the machine shop, then I can get it tuned. "what did you to stop belt slip with the procharger? what psi are you seeing"
I havent done anything to stop belt slip, I havent noticed it slipping either. I just have the belt set quite tight. The PSI stays consistent so I assume it isnt slipping. With an aggressive timing tune I saw 13 psi at 6500 in third gear. Its normally 11 psi.
I will have details for a rental soon, The rental that is in the works now is for some local guys, but we might need to fill in some spots. Spots are $200 dollars each. That is an even split for 10 cars. That is for 10am-4pm, run as much as you want. They dont even tech your car they just have you sign some forms.
If you guys think there is an interest we can set something up for just Dakotas.... I tried to get some spots filled last November and didnt get any responses..except that it was too expensive. I personally think its a bargain. How much is it to race on a normal day? I dont even know anymore but you only get like 3 or 4 passes if your lucky. At a rental you can make 100 if you wanted. When I used to race bikes, I used to make an easy 50 passes at a rental.

Yup, most folks consider $100-200 too much to go racing, but if you can get as many runs in as you want, it's worth it. Especially if you're working on your launch with adjusting shocks and caltracs, etc. You can make back to back to back runs with minor adjustments and see what really works. And then of course, for folks that don't have roll bars and want to make more than one pass, it's definitely worth it.

I dont race much any more so the rental is my big race day for the season. If you go to the track 3 times you spend more than $200 on gas and entry fees, and probably dont even make as many passes as you will at 1 rental, plus the tuning benefits are huge. And also there is no stress being called to the lanes or being told to hurry to the line, you can also do a 1 minute burnout and heat the tires 3 times in a row if you like.

That's pretty much where I'll be now. I used to go race at Atco all the time, but I lived 20 mins away. Now all I have is an 1/8th mile track, but luckily they don't tech, so I can race there all I want. But a 1/4 mile rental once or twice a year will be nice.

I'll probably continue to hit the AZs Fastest Street Car shootout races all summer long, but that will be trying to hit an 11.50 dial every time instead of seeing how quick it can go. It's not even fun going to the track when it's 110° outside. The fire jacket and helmet in a black truck with the windows rolled up is just icing on the cake. I'm looking forward to cooler temps already.... only 6 more months of heat! LOL
