I know it's not just mine... I've seen several Dodge trucks that have that faded look to the paint. My question is; Is it just the clearcoat or is it the paint itself? It's almost paid off and as soon as it is I'm going to take it and have the hood, fenders and top of the cab resprayed.

Any guess as to how much i'm about to drop on this?

Is it because I didn't wax it enough?

Thanks,
Danny

If it's kind of white and flaky, then the problem is the clearcoat. Do you keep your truck outside, or garaged? I think most trucks that are left outside are the ones that have problems with the clearcoat failing. I say that because mine's a '00 and it's garaged and I haven't had a problem with the clearcoat.

My R/T has been outside for all its life. Its a 2000, and the clear coat has just taken a shit on the roof above windsheild this year.

Mine's a '99, and it stays outside. I've got peel right above the headlights, a spot on the door pillar, and on the roof.

my roof is trashed and is getting a re spray this spring sometime. up until i got the charger i waxed the hell out of the truck almost every 2 weeks in the summer since it stayed outside. but yea we call it "PX8 disease" on the black trucks. the clear is trashed. i also noticed a little bit of rust on the welds of my rocker drip edges this year. but that i can grind down and spray myself cause its a a part of the truck that will look fine with a cheap paint job since its out of view..

my friend runs a carstar body shop down the street from my house and he is gonna let me paint the roof for cheap if i pay cash, but he is so backed up right now i have no idea when he will get to it.

Make sure its taken down the metal, the dodge paint will continue to oxidize underneath fresh paint once this starts. Ask me how I know :-(

that seems kinda high just for the roof. but that depends i guess on the area you live in. i had my ss camaros hood door nose redone for 700.

Mine also has the cancer starting in the middle right above the windshield. The issue is the clearcoat and Chrysler is aware of the issue. If you really pursue it with a dealership you may be able to get it resprayed and Chrysler pick up half the bill, but I believe there is a 10 year cutoff from the manufacture date for this. We had a few people come in the peeling paint issue when I was a service writer, but all of those tickets went straight to the service manager and the warranty clerk so I'm not sure how they handled them. This was back in 2005 and we had a Gen II Dakota come in that Ma Mopar flipped the bill to respray. May be worth checking in to.

To answer your question: it's has little to do with not waxing it enough. :)
