View Full Version : spammers
I keep getting spam PMs. Can we change any of the settings for new members to prevent these people from spamming everyone?? Like require authentication prior to joining(would require better monitoring by mods) or maybe setting a minimum post count prior to being able to send a PM??

We already have it set for moderation, so one of the admins is letting these folks in. I haven't been approving memberships, cause my internet sucks out here. I think maybe we just need to make sure the rest of the admins know how to properly check new memberships.
So what you are saying is the current mods suck??:jester:

I'm just guessing that they probably don't have that many Dakotas in Afghanistan or Belize.

Those look like spammers to me. Not sure who approved their accounts tho.

The users that were referenced above are not fully registered forum members. Those users exist on the system but can't post anything until their accounts are accepted (or deleted) by a moderator.
There is a few steps we use to help try to prevent spammers:
Step 1) A user must verify some random letters on the screen before they can try to register with the system. Unfortunately both vBulletin and gmail's graphic verification systems have been hacked to death, so they're not providing much security anymore.
Step 2) After submitting their registration, a message is sent to the user via e-mail which must be read and responded to in order to complete the registration process and put the user in the moderation queue. If the e-mail address they gave is fake or the message is not responded to (legitimate users - check your spam/junk folder!), then the user will be held in limbo indefinitely. Unfortunately these users don't appear in the 'moderate users' queue so I have to flush these out 500+ at a time every few weeks.
Step 3) After the user's registration is complete, they are put into a moderation queue. A system moderator (all of the DRTC execs are moderators) must manually accept or deny each registration before the user can access the system. Unfortunately at the moment it looks like myself, gofastgray, and bad425rt are the only ones processing registrations at this time - so it can take 1-4 days to finish your registration.
Unfortunately we're not perfect - we are trying to screen people based upon their username and/or registration information, but sometimes one slips through the cracks.
In the future please post the username of the person who is spamming you via PM or posting new threads, that way we can identify how they got into the system to begin with, and add some new filtering procedures to block those types of users.

Who sent you the spam? I'll look up their registration information.

I get about 1 spam PM per week from here. I always just delete it and figure by the time I go to report it, they've already sent spam PMs to everybody else and are probably gone by now. I'll keep them and forward them from now on... just in case you wanted to get bigger, stay longer or buy drugs online cheap. :jester:

Hey duner, send me user names if possble when you get the pm spamers. I havnt had any since that outbreak a while back.
I havnt filtered through new members in a while. Been busy but I'll make sure to get on it again! Don't want anyone waiting more than a couple days before they can join us here.
Here is the last user I got spammed by in PM
DevidasMarshall
Clikking on username results in a screen saying:
Invalid User specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator (http://dakotart.com/forum/sendmessage.php)
Here's one I got last week
JuidasupnuddY
When I recieved original PM, got the same error message as above, but now it's showing up as banned.
And from 3 weeks ago
cicCashy
Have a couple older ones as well. Like Duner, it happens about once a week, and I have never been able to view the user profile when I first recieve the PMs, so it appears as though they are able to send PMs without being approved members.

Ok, so what's hapening is spammers are signing up, and sending shit before we can go through the list to delete them. You need to be accepted before you can post, but can PM right away.
We just need to go through the new users list more often to catch them before they start sending PM's. Or before they send too many since that's something we can't control.
Maybe there's a way to keep new members from sending pm's too before being accepted?

Not at all - I'm sure those people you pointed out are spammers. This site gets about 20-30 of them per day. Until a moderator purges them off the system, they're visible on the member's list. Apparently they were able to send PM's while waiting in queue, but that's now been disabled.
