Hey guys, I found a 1999 Dakota R/T with 108k on it. Its red with regular cab. Would $4000 for that pickup be a pretty good deal? Look forward to joining the community.

Hey man and welcome to the forum. If the body is in good shape (paint and cosmetics) and you like the truck I'd say its a fair deal. One thing is try and find the background on the work that has been done to the truck. The transmission are a little weak from the factory so one your test drive make sure it shifts smooth and one time.

Wow...thanks for all of the responses! Actually I asked about the tranny and he said 2 years ago it started acting up and he had it overhauled. Last night while driving it, it seemed ok to me. About the spending money comment...I'll have to find a way to do it without my wife finding out. Ha ha.

Well...it sounds like the deal is going through. Pretty excited. Its got a set of Durango wheels with winter tires, and a set of R/T rims with performance tires. Question though...he said the R/T rims are 18".....did they make 18" R/T rims? I think he meant 17 inch.

Factory ones are 17" but you could get an aftermarket Chrome or Silver in 20".

Yeah, I've eaten at Lo Sole Mio. Wasn't impressed with it, but everyone else seems to think it's the best place to eat.
Used to work in Millard. It's not that far of a drive. And ignore the comments from the peanut gallery. They're just haters who like to give me shit.:nana:
And we can always meet up afterward the deal if you want. I'm interested to see these supposed 18" wheels. I tried replying to him on nestreetscene, but he's ignored me there.

Had running boards on my '99 R/T. People gave me shit for having running boards on a "sport" truck saying they didn't belong.

Yes, with the R/Ts, should be right at 2K RPM @ 60mph. Kick the OD off and it should jump to right at 3K RPMs.

Go a little differen't like me and get reflective ones. The ones on the white truck are silver reflective.

Custom made or purchased? My wife is a designer and hates the font R/T is written in.
They were purchased from www.reflectiveconcepts.com (http://www.reflectiveconcepts.com) They are the stock style decals that come on the R/Ts. Got them for free because I supplied them my vin # so they could have a template to make them. They don't list them on the website though because Dodge won't give them a license to sell them. If you want them, just email them and tell them I refered you. I went with the silver reflective on my white truck because they are kind of ghost decals during the day and at certain angles you can't see them at all. Used black on my blue truck because they didnt stand out as much during the day as the stock silver decals. But then again, they both stand out a lot ot night, so i guess not all that subtle. lol On my current truck, only using the 5.9 R/T on the doors and not "DAKOTA". Think it's looks better that way. Unless you go custom designed, the only other option is the chrome badges from the Other Dodge R/T models.
As far as your wife and the font, that's what sets us apart from the other R/T models. It's not the standard block letters that you see every day.

Hey guys...I have noticed something. I guess I dont know for sure, but I feel like my R/T is a little lazy accelerating while doing 50-60ish. All I have to compare this with is my old 1995 Camaro Z28. I realize this pickup wont accelerate like that did...and I have durango wheels with big truck tires on it right now. Maybe with the R/T rims and performance tires it will feel different. Should it still pull pretty hard? Its probably impossible for someone to say without driving it. Oh...and they were 17" R/T rims. Not 18" like he said. Ahh well.

Oh, and I checked in the intake. There is some oil in there. How much should there be? I know the PCV probably leaks some in...but how much should there be? What exactly happens when that gasket goes out? Does it make any noticable problems, or just burns oil?
There shouldn't be any oil in the intake manifold. At least not noticeable. What happens is it burns more oil and will cause detonation in the summer. Need to upgrade to a 2bbl M1. ;)
As for the acceleration, it's hard to say without driving it, but even I haven't driven a stock R/T in a very long time. With the M1 and a ported throttle body, the 50MPH rolling WOT will feel a lot better than with the stock stuff. With the stock beer barrel, about a 30mph punch should feel pretty good.
boss99er
03-01-2009, 01:57 AM
Ha ha, I follow what you mean on the M1. How much do those run? What do you mean though about the stock beer barrel?
Beer barrel is the common name for the stock intake manifold due to it's resemblance of a beer keg. Also referred to as the kegger. Either way, it's designed for low end torque and towing, not WOT high speed runs. There are some things you can do to it to make it better while you have it apart to re-do the belly pan gasket.
boss99er
03-01-2009, 03:03 PM
Oh, so I can just redo the gasket for now? I'm not sure I have the funds to buy the M1 just outta the blue.
Yes, you can just re-do the plunum gasket on the stock intake manifold.

Cool, I might have to just do that for now. How much difference does a K&N FIPK make on these? I've put them on a car before but it didnt do a whole lot. Although, the car wasnt fast to begin with. I think I saw the FIPK were arount $250, and the M1 was around $400? Would that make quite a difference? I'm sorry I have so many questions...I've never had a truck...and its been a few years since I've had a V8 even. Once more question though. I want to put tailpipes on it. Right now they dumb above the axle and that makes a pretty loud drone in the cab. Know any good shops that wont charge me a ton?

03-01-2009, 07:59 PM
You can do the "K&N Filter kit" mod for under $200. Offset base, 2.213" K&N Filter, and a K&N Extream lid. Looks good, functions good, and not tha pricey. I haven't done it yet, but it seems better then a CAI to me

No, the kit for the Dak's locates the filter in the front corner ( pass./side ) with a heat shield between it & the motor. It makes a big improvement!
boss99er
03-02-2009, 12:01 PM
So you say skip the custom filter and go with the Fipk?
I'm running the 14x3 open element(round) filter with the exstream lid. With my ram air hood it works just fine. I actually traded my FIPK I had for this set up. But at the time I was more into the looks than performance. The 14x3 really helps to de-clutter the engine bay.

It also looks like you've gotten rid of your clutch fan....is that correct? Is there an electric fan conversion for these things?
Yes and no on the e-fan. The one I have is only for '00+ trucks. Won't fit the '97-'99 radiators. But there are other options available if you don't mind fabbing up your own mounts.
boss99er
03-04-2009, 12:55 AM
Hey hskr...not sure if you know this but figured I would ask. I ordered the 2.5x14 K&N filter, 1.5" offset base, and extreme lid......am I going to run into problems with my radiator hose? I saw the parts list and ordered what I needed...but I have since heard people asking about that radiator hose. Mine is a 99 and it sounds like the hose routes differently.
Yes the hose routes differently. You can either try to trim the end of the radiator hose down that goes on the intake manifold to get the hose lower, or buy a throttle body spacer to lift the throttle body up.
boss99er
03-04-2009, 01:54 PM
Ahh man...the TB risers are around 90 bucks from what I've seen. Is there a way to get some flex hose or something to just route it like the newer Dakota's?
I'm sure you can figure something out. I wouldn't use the rubber flex hose cause that stuff looks like ass.

03-04-2009, 08:33 PM
Hmm...I probably can. My first project needs to be the intake gasket though. I think its leaking quite a bit.
boss99er
03-06-2009, 03:38 AM
So, does the blown intake gasket have any effect on the way the truck runs? I know it needs changed because of the oil in there. Just curious. Parts should be here soon.
Well, you are burning oil so it will have some effect on performance.

New problem. Last night it rained here. THe pickup was sitting outside. This morning I went out to go somewhere and it wont start. It NEVER had starting problems before. What could have gotten wet? I also pulled a couple plugs and they look horrible.
boss99er
03-07-2009, 07:01 PM
Well, I got the truck up and running. I replaced the plugs....THEY NEEDED IT!!! I replaced the rotor and cap...the rotor was pretty worn. After all was said and done...it still seemed pretty flooded and wouldnt start. I stomped it to the floor and cranked and cranked. It finally popped off and ran REALLY rough for a couple seconds. Once it cleaned up it runs great again. Well, as good as it can with a pretty leaky belly pan gasket.
boss99er
03-18-2009, 02:09 AM
Hey Hskr....are we ever going to meet up? Ha ha, it just seems to never work out. Either you've been busy or I've been out of town. I got all of my stuff for the Hughes belly pan, would you be up for helping tear through that some time? If you're busy though...I'll probably get the nerve up to do it myself. I'm always overly cautious the first time I get into a new engine. I used to have a 1995 Z28 with an LT1 and by the time I sold that car, I could almost rebuild the whole engine and not be afraid of it. I was in that thing almost every weekend.
Well, for right now, my wife is working Sunday, so looks like I will be home all day that day. We can do it then. I will be working on Saturday so that won't work.

That might actually work...how long do you think it would take us? I think I have everything we need for the job. Anything specific I might need?
I should have all the tools required here, but if you want to grab a gasket scraper, or some new razor blades to clean the gasket surfaces that would work. 5qts oil and filter, 1 gallon anti-freeze, a 180 degree t-stat(recommended, not required), some brake/parts cleaner, I'd also suggest trying to get some new intake manifold bolts from the dealer, they are fairly cheap. If you have a die grinder, then we could "modify" your intake manifold while we have it apart. Without screwing with the runners while it's apart, shouldn't take more than 4 hours to do everything.
boss99er
03-19-2009, 01:20 PM
That should work, what time were you thinking? Do you have torque wrenches? I can bring those.
Don't need no sticking torque wrenches. It's only 12ft/lb for torque on the bolts. Only time I've ever used a torque wrench is on the first M1 I installed, and to date, that is also the only one I've ever have develop a leak. If you haven't bought new gaskets yet, I recommend getting the Felpro 1213 intake gasket set. Not sure what Hughes sends with thier "kit". I despise the rubber end seals that come with the "correct" gasket sets for the Magnum motors. But I think I have an extra set of the cork end seals in my garage we can use. Also, forgot to add that you should buy some RTV/gasket maker to use in the corners. I recommend The Right Stuff. It's about $12 a can at the parts stores, but it's better than you average tube of Permatex RTV. If you don't want to spend that much, than a tube of ultra blue Permatex, or any other high temp sensor safe sealant should work.
As for time, when do you want to come over?? I will be up by 7-8AM with the kids. They go down for their nap at ~12:30 which will give us about 2-3 hours of un-interupted work time. But if you are comfortable turning wrenches on your own, you can start the tear down while they are awake, and we can use that time to re-assembly.
boss99er
03-20-2009, 12:33 AM
Ha ha, really? No torque wrenches? Umm, I'll have to check for sure what time works out, but I'm pretty sure any time. I certainly am comfortable wrenching by myself...its more the random little things about the engine I might not know about. Maybe there arent any of those things. There is a small chance my father-in-law who is a professional mechanic might be here saturday and was interesting in helping do this. If I know for sure one way or another, I'll let you know right away so you know for sure what to plan on. I still want to meet up with ya though, either way sometime.
Bring him along on Sunday. No need for a professional mechanic. This is 100% shadetree work. Adult beverages included(byob) :woot:

03-21-2009, 07:17 PM
Well, we didnt get it done today...so are we still on for tomorrow? What time do you want me to come over? I'll email ya to get your address and all that business.
Well, we got him all fixed up. Started around 11 and finished up about 3:30. That truck defintely needs some TLC and I think Matt will be able to give it. The coolant looked like crap when it came out. Wasn't green at all. He's do for a coolant flush. He had a lot of oil inside the intake manifold. Defintely needed the pan gasket done. This is the first time I had worked with the Hughes billet plate. Hopefully it works for him. I don't think the TB had ever been off the truck, and with the oil leak, it was caked with build up on the bottom and inside the IAC port. Got that all cleaned up as well. Also found that you can easily fit a 14x2.5(and form the look a 14x3) K&N open element filter on a '99 without having to modify the upper radiator hose as long as you have the offset base. It just won't sit centered on the motor. Has to be offset to the rear passenger side. He also has a powersteering fluid leak that he needs to get check, but other than that, the truck was fairly clean under the hood. Wasn't much dirt to blow off before we pulled the manifold.
boss99er
03-23-2009, 04:30 PM
Yep, I concure. I think body wise, the truck is pretty solid from all of the crawling around I've done looking at it. Not too dirty underneath and pretty straight body. And yes...that coolant was amazing. I bet thats still stock coolant. I wish you guys could have seen the plugs, cap and rotor I pulled off of it right after I bought it. Luckily, it looks like he did fairly frequent oil changes (he gave me receipts that showed pretty steady changes). He just neglected the stuff that people take for granted like sparkplugs, coolant changes, that sort. I dont know if this is where the belly pan leak is noticable, but when I stomp on it in the midrange it has alot more getup. Could have been the cleaning or filter...but before it seemed to just chug when you got on it doing 40-50 mph. It also doesnt ping anymore!!! That was the best thing I noticed...that and the WHOOSH the airlid makes. Thanks again Brian!!!
