There's a good selection of 255/50's out there. I'm running Riken Raptors in that size, good tire and pretty cheap, I think you can still find 'em around $90/each. They're an inch shorter than stock tires, but look good with a drop.

I have 255 50 17 raptors in back and 245 45 summitomos in the front. The front tires were something my buddy had to get me through inspection. I'll be looking for two rears and sliding the raptors up front for nexdt season. (rolling on 15" snows right now)

Go on craigslist near your area and try and find some snow tires in a 15 or 16 and just get some extra wheels. You don't want to drive in the snow with the RSA's, they suck as much as suck can be.

the best tires i ever had for the stock wheels (my dunlop m3 snow tires don't count) were the 275/50 falkens. those hooked so well and looked fantastic. I've had all kinds of tires. even 315 bfg kdws. i run 20s in the summer but if ever had to buy 17in summer tires again i would get the falkens again.

ripken raptors are like the cheepest piece of shit performance tires i sell. i don't know why you guys like them. lol.

I went with the Raptors after two sets of BFG KDWS' and I put 'em right on par with the BFG's, but at half the price. Handling is great, wet traction is excellent, I won't rate dry traction cause that's a joke for me on any street tire. I can't rate their longevity, cause at this rate they're gonna dry rot before I wear 'em out. :jester:

Your opinion of the 275/50 Falkens and mine are completely 180. I'd put the Falkens up there as one of the worst tires I've used on my truck. Only worse tires would be the stock RSAs. They were hard as rocks(420 treadwear) spun easily and gave no warning before letting go in corners. They were on the front of my '99 when I totaled it. Best tires I've ran by far have been the BFG G-Force KDWS in 255/50, followed by the Kumho SXTs in 255/50. Running the Riken Raptors now during the summer and they perform good enough for me. I don't drive anywhere near like I used to. And I have 15" slicks for track use.

If you are lowered, go with the 255/50/17 sizze. Lots more options available, and better performaing tires. It's the stock size for the '94-'96 Chevy Impalla SS, so of course there is a lot more support for that size.

285/40s would be worse than a 255/50. Stick with the stock 255/55, or look into the 275/55, or 255/60 sizes. I had 255/60 Dunlop Sport SP5000s for a while and they performed fairly well, but I got them for free so can't complain. Also ran 275/55 Pirelli Scorpions, and for straight line dry traction, they were probably the best tire I used, but they rolled over in the corners more due to taller sidewalls. but if you don't drive hard into corners, won't be a problem.

I was lookin at the 285/40 for the rear, then something like a 255/55 for the front. Was lookin the bfg's but pay out the ass from them on summit. I got 255/75's on there now I belive. Just lookin for something to put on the new wheels and keep whats on mine now for street driving

For starts, I'd suggest a short lesson in tire sizes. a 285/40 tire is about 2" shorter than a 255/55 tire. Putting shorter tires on the rear and larger on the front would look goofy as hell, and will leave you with some rather large wheel gap in the rear. As well as throwing off your speedo by 5mph @ 70, and throwing off your odometer to the tune of 40 miles extra in difference for every 500 driven.

What exactly are you looking to buy tires for if you want to use what you have now for "street" driving?

Wow, what I was told was completly wrong. I was told that for ever with you add ( 255-265 exp.), and you drop one sidewall, ( 75-65), that the size stays the same. I wanted to keep a same size or there abouts on the front and rear, but have more meat in the rear.

As for the " street driving", whats on the truck is near new, so I will use that for the cross country roadtrip as well as some DD once I get to San Diego. The other set for the new wheels will be ultra high preformance summer tires, maybe a drag radial, not sure yet.

Thanks for the info AT1

Use this wite next time you want to check out different tire sizes.
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html
Allows you to compare different sizes to each other. Also, most online tire stores show the specs for each tire to include diameter and recommended rim size. Different manufacturers list slightly different specs for the same size tire, but in general they are all close enough it won't make that much of a difference as long as the tire size reads the same.

After playin around with it AT1, I think I came to what I *think* I want, pending how wide you can go on a 17x9

Nitto NT450's ( all 4 corners), in 275-50-17's

I found I can go up to a 295, but don't think the stock wheels are wide enough, nor are the new ones

Good luck with the Shittos, I mean Nittos. Some people love them, some people hate them, and some people only run them for looks because the performance is lacking.

its more like for every 20 up in width you drop 5 in the second number. ie 255/45/20 is the same hight as 275/40/20. but it only works so far. if you go up more than 2 or 3 sizes wider it starts to not equal out.
