Hi Guys

I'm new to this forum and so far I really like it. There are tons of useful information and since I'm one of only a few proud RT owners here in Europe it helps me out a lot.

Actually there are only 2 other Dakota Rts here in Switzerland that I know of... :-)

I own a 2002 bright silver CC RT that I'm about to modify over the winter season. As you can imagine it's sometimes hard to get parts and such since nobody is familiar with these trucks over here in Switzerland....hence I'm looking for some people that can give me useful information about what I should do to my silver bullet; however I'm gonna post my questions in the appropriate forums and keep my fingers crossed to get some answers.

Alright, keep up the good posts guys.

Cheers from cheesy switzerland

Stefan

Greetings! What is done to your truck so far, or is it completely stock?

well I got the K&N FIPK cold air intake, 180° thermostat and a magnaflow exhaust system (1in/2out with stock exhaust manifolds and cats).

I'm basically interested in getting some more power going without getting check engine lights...the vehicle inspection over here is very tough so I gotta make sure it meets all emission standards.

What mods can be done that do not affect emmission..? Thanks a lot

lots. Do they only inspect for codes or equipment changes too? You can get a nice exhaust that wont pop CELs and a nice intake manifold too!

Yeh we need more info on your emissions inspection requirement for US built vehicles.

Also, how fast (quick) do you want to go? What kind of power numbers are we talking. You can go very fast in these trucks with the right combination and a big wallet, most likely pass emissions too.

well they care about emissions as well as excessive noise. in order to bring the "noise" down and pass vehicle inspection I had to replace the exhaust tips with two supertrapp mufflers as used on bikes. after inspection I just remove the internals of the supertrapp... for checking emissions they utilize the OBD interface...but my magnaflow along with the cats and supertrapp have been written down in my vehicle registration to prevent any modifications. I guess I could still install some headers tho... :rockwoot:
In terms of engine modifications I can pretty much do anything I want as long as it doesn't throw codes..
as a first step I was going to purchase some headers, roller rockers, performance ignition wires/cap/rotor, intake manifold, bigger throttle body and get the pcm flashed. further down the road I'd like to install a higher performance cam that doesn't throw codes and still gets me to pass emission...

Any recommendations what equipment to buy for my 2002?

--> since I'm in the holy land of cheese it's important that everything will fit in the first place since shipping will be friggin expensive for all this stuff....

well forgot to say that all I want to do is unleash the power that the 5.9 has to offer. I hear that the 02 and 03 models are very restricted from the factory to meet emission and such... I don't wanna go crazy since it's still my daily driver...

just want to get the power a 5.9 should make in the first place :jester:

I got about 1500$ to spend for engine mods....what should I do first?

wow I'm a real rookie...forgot to post another thing....
I don't know if it matters or not but I bought my truck in Canada.. just thought it may make a difference when it comes to emmission standards...

Do you know anyone who works at an emission testing station that can have the footnote about your current exhaust removed from the record? Might be of use in the future.

In the meantime, m1 intake, TB and PCM flash should really wake a late model up, they were pretty tame from the factory. Look for used to stretch your budget and you'll have money left over. For used PCMs, does your truck have security? (IE is there a light that blinks on the dash when it's locked up)

RTswiss
12-10-2008, 02:17 PM
well there are certain ways to get around that footnote..that shouldn't be a problem....or I can always reinstall the original equipment for inspection.

yes my vehicle does have security but I don't recall seeing a security lamp flashing on my dash when it's locked. but this may be due to the fact that I got an aftermarket security system installed with remote start and so on...

I guess I will just got for an M1, RR, TB, headers, and the PCM flash...just gotta wait 2 more motnhs to get some more cash together.

Can anyone give me the right specifications needed for aformentioned equipment. I'm a newbie and don't want the wrong stuff to get shipped out here.

M1: EGR/non EGR, 2 barrel/4barrel....what do I need?
RR: What roller rockers should I use? 1.6 or 1.7?
TB: What size (50, 52...) should I get?
Headers: since I can't change the Y-pipe due to emission what shorties should I get?
PCM: there is a flashed PCM for sale in the for sale section. wil this work with my truck?

I really appreciate your help guys!

My Opinion...

M1 2 Barrel - EGR or Non EGR someone will need to Chime in...
RR - 1.6 adjustable is what I want, but 1.7 should be fine, depends on what mods overall, someone please chime in again...
Headers if shorties, I would say Eddies
And the PCM I think would work depending on the security feature, thats something I would verify first on your truck.
TB I would say 52 mm F&B Throttle body.

I would go the non egr if you can, with 17.'s IMHO

hi guys

first of all thanks a lot for your fast replies. can anyone tell me what the difference between egr and non egr is? I'm a rookie and still need to learn a lot of stuff. :-)

I understand that rockers with a higher ratio do lift the valves faster and longer...right? how does that affect performance and reliability? any drawbacks of using 1.7 with a stock cam..?

and btw, we do have quite a bit of snow out here. it snowed for the past 2 days so I put some wintershoes on my baby...but trust me, driving the RT in the snow is a bitch :woot:

and btw it would be nice to get the actual part numbers..( I hope somebody is kind enough to so :-) ) thus to make sure I get the right stuff.

how do I post pics here? I'm sure some of you guys would love to see some swiss pics...

adios for now

You can do the img thing if the pics are hosted somewhere, but you should be able to attach pics to your post. Scroll down and look for "manage attachments", click on that, then browse, then choose the pic from your HD. There might be a size limit though.

thanks guys for your help
I will take some pictures on the weekend and post them as soon as I get a chance.
I think I will go the route of installing RR, M1, PCM Flash, headers for now.

Do I need different valve covers if I go with 1.7 RR? still looking forward to getting a reply to my M1 EGR question.. cheers

HS 1.7 rockers were designed to fit under stock valve covers.

Looks like your on the right path with 1.7rr, m1, 52mm tb, and a computer reflash. I had all of those mods on my 03 along with some shorty headers and it was a diff. animal b/c it had power down low and up top. All of those listed mods should net you somewhere around 30-40rwhp.

For what it is worth....

The Edelbrock Headers are well worth the effort and are a simple 2 hour install if you have access to a lift, and I found that if you buy a couple bags of the plastic retainers you can pop the inner fender liners out and it makes the install that much easier...

I have a set of JBA shorty headers in good condition. Dont really have them up for sale anywhere yet. I would recommend a mid-length or long tube header. But if inspections are like californias are, then shorties can help make some bottom end and midrange. You can usually find JBA, Gibson or edelbrock headers for cheap. Dont buy any other shorty headers. They are shwag. Welcome aboard! You're in the right place.
