View Full Version : Reaching the limits of the M&H's

Well I think i've about decided to retire the M&H's after this season. I noticed last night traction was hit or miss off the line. I had to do a pretty mean burnout to get them to hook. I am thinking about stepping down to a 16in wheel and going with a wrinkle wall drag radial (going all out and trying to break driveshafts, rearends, and ect.). I also need to do a little suspension work. At the track I had to crank the adj.shock all the way up and lower the tire pressure to 18psi to get them to hook on the juice and it was still a hit or miss ordeal. I'm thinking something in the range of a 28/12.50 or 13.50/16 for the new setup with so skinnies up front. Don't get me wrong the m&h's are some kickass tires for sure.

might i suggest a simple/cheap suspension tweak?

i don't know what your running right now, but.... i spent $25 on mine and it seems to be working good for me.

1) cut the spring clamps off the rears of the leafs.
2) get yourself some load-leaf-helpers and mount them to the front/bottoms of the leafs, like so.... this is all i have done, and it's working for me.

how would those extra load support leafs work with a block kit in the rear? would there be ground clearance problems?

they have nothing to do with a "block kit". they bolt (or clamp) directly to the leaf pack. no clearance issues.

How big of a gain did you pick up on your 60ft? Do you leave these on all the time, or just bolt up when your headed for the track?

i don't know what gains i have. i just know i have next to no traction issues. and i leave them on at all times, as well as the rear clamps off at all times. been this way for a few years now.

he means would they be too close to the ground, since with blocks, you leaf springs actually get closer to the ground when the truck is lowered.

ok, i see. i wouldn't think so. they don't stick down too far.

I'm with Alan. I run Hoosiers in 9" and they 60' better than the 12.5" ET streets ever did on my other truck. Those were always spinning.

i guess i should have re-phrased my question...i was saying that i have a block kit installed on my truck (levels it out, didnt want to drop it to low) and i was wondering if i would run into any clearance issues if i installed the extra load leafs? the blocks are installed between the leafs and the rear axle.

i see the reply to the question...i posted without looking....how low do the loaded leaf supports hang from the leafs?

MAYBE 2". but the lowest point is far enough back that i wouldn't worry about it. besides, they're only about $25 for the pair, LOL!!

Can i get them through an average retailer like Auto Zone? If not, who should i go through?

Just barely - and thanks to 350# of ballast in the bed of the truck slamming against the tailgate at just the right time. :woot:

The 60' number was great! - but the mph was slower.

I was demonstrating some "Dynamic Squat"...
in reference to our guest speaker at the Nats in Topeka.

I even got booted off the track for the "picture" pass. I ran 11.29 earlier in the day and they warned me to slow it down. I added the weight and figured it would slow it down by at least 3 tenths. Not quite. It went 11.48 because it hooked better. They sent me packing.

I'd like to throw in that removing the rear spring clamps and adding fronts on my hotchkis leafs has done nothing at all to detriment my handling, as I autoX and drag race without changing them around.

15" or 16" slicks will obviously perform better than a 17" DR, but I think the M&H's are capable of 1.5's with the right setup.

oh yea they are capable of 1.5's no doubt I'm not to far off with some 1.64's. I just hate the fact that sometimes they hook up and sometimes they don't.

what air press you running them at?

I've tried 25psi,22psi,20psi, and 18psi and at 18 I think they hooked the best

i was thinkin you should try a higher press. i had Discount Tire mount/balance mine and NEVER adjusted the tire press. and i never had traction issues with them, granted i never ran the bottle on them.

Well, there was that one part.... where my head bounced off the table top. But just for a second. That's when I caught that "Dynamic Rise" part of the lecture.

True, a slick would be more consistent.
