somewhere close to the radiator, somewhat out of the way, but exposed enough to be able to fill/drain it easily. It's your choice though.

I know I am coming in late but I used the CSR 931 1quart catch can. It is anodized blue and I bought the billet bracket in the same color and mounted it just behind the radiator. Looks really nice and have had a lot of compliments on it.

Was the one quart really big enough? I loved that overflow tank but I really feel that need to be bigger so I ended up t.i.g. welding my own.

I make them out of stainless, I made one for someone here but never received payment, I even powdercoated silver instead of polishing it

I have never had a single problem with it. Looks really nice in the engine bay and functions just fine. My stock one was in the stock shroud and it didn't hold that much either.
I can try to get a picture if you want

Yeah I'd love to see a picture of it. The stock Overflow in the shroud on the 2000 and up trucks holds about 3 quarts last time I checked mine. I was just messing around and wanted to see how much it held so I measured it out but that was well above the full mark on the little dipstick they have in there.

So my question for those running the fancy billet overflow cans, how do you monitor coolant level? Part of having an overflow is having some coolant in reserve and being able to visually see the level to know if you are losing coolant or getting low. It's the main reason I chose the "natural" color JAZ recirculating overflow cause you can still see the fluid level through the plastic.

Hmm, guess I chose function over looks with mine as in I can just look at it and see fluid level I don't have to open any caps and try and guess how high or low the fluid is inside.

I guess taking the cap off would be too hard to check the fluid level, do you have a see thru engine block so you can also see your oil level?

I went with the CSR because it just looked better than all the rest. Like I said I seriously have never had any cooling issues what so ever. Plus I bet if everyone on this list checked their daily driver they would have empty overflow tanks or very little "extra" coolant in them.

You will never see any vehicle I own with a low or empty overflow tank unless a leak developed that I didn't notice.

What about low oil? Still burning a quart a week? Have it on a permanent oil IV?

Pretty much. It's a quart every tank of gas. lol So pretty easy to keep topped off, everytime I fill up I add a quart.

Yep, have another blocck waiting for me in Nebraska to get machined and use for a rebuild. Pretty sure what happened was a poor quality machine shop fucking up the bores which never kept the rings from properly seating. I'm thinking they are slightly ovaled. Everything else that could possibly cause it has been checked and/or replaced.

So I was planning on ordering an overflow tank next week or so but I ended up with a twitchy finger and bought it 30 seconds ago lol. I figured a worst-case senerio would require 31.35oz of capacity based on the amount of coolant I found is in these engines and the amount the liquid can expand. I wanted a big round aluminum or stainless steel cylinder so I bought this 34oz JEGS model: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VRALP4/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm guessing that since the tank works by pressure and suction instead of gravity that the vertical placement is irrelevant, but does the top of this tank need to be equal to or higher than the highest point of the coolant system?

stevenz1inoc
03-25-2015, 09:23 PM
I think it's too small but since you ordered it already I guess you're stuck with it. 48 ounce is the smallest I would ever use on one of our trucks. Others will argue but I've had a lot of experience in the radiator industry and 32oz is too small if you want to play it safe for a daily driven vehicle that might see some long distance driving especially in hot weather.

Now if those conditions do not exist you will get away just fine with that small of a unit or even smaller.

I thought 34oz seemed like it could be cutting it close, but it ended up being one of the biggest ones I was able to find so I figured it had to be good since most of the ones I found were in the upper teens to low 20s. I live in a hot climate so after reading your comment I figured it's better to be safe so I ordered the larger 54oz version tonight. I didn't notice that one last night when I was shopping.

That's an excellent choice! Better safe than sorry. With the warmer climate the engine has a bigger chance of running warmer obviously, but still within a normal range, but as you know, the warmer an engine runs, the more it will want to overflow into the tank and then draw back when it cools. Make sure the new tank is vented to atmosphere and not pressurized. I don't need to ensure the top is higher than the rest of the coolant system, right? It works by pressure and suction so the vertical placement is more or less irrelevant right?

So what are these cars that can use the 20oz-or so tanks? 4-banger ricers and Amish buggies?

I've always tried to mount it level with the top of the radiator but it really shouldn't matter so long as it doesn't run dry and can draw back into the cooling system.

Good question. Smaller engine cars and some GM cars. My mothers northstar V8 only pushes about 10-15oz back into the overflow when hot. They have a different type of system though and use a fill/expansion tank. But yeah, that engine hardly pushes any back into the tank when warm.
