View Full Version : Fall Meet Part Duex - Nov 15-16

Capitol Raceway in Crofton, MD has Sunday Test and Tune sessions in November. I plan on going on Sunday November, 16 to get in some passes. TnT is from noon-5pm on Sunday. Gates are at 11am I believe.

If people want to come out to this, I can make it a two day event. On Saturday Clipper City Brewery is hosting a brewery tours at 1pm and 230pm in Baltimore. We went there in the spring and had a good time. There is go kart racing near the track in Crofton, BBQ at my house, and "night life entertainment" to be had after dark to kill off the rest of Saturday. I have a local hotel that is across the parking lot from Arundel Mills Mall. There is a huge Bass Pro Shops store there, DuClaw restaurant/brewery, Dave and Busters if you want games/pool/bowling, and movies all within stumbling distance.

There is also a dyno ten minutes down the road from the hotel. I can talk to them if people want to dyno on Saturday instead of the beer and other shennanigans.

Saturday there's also a UMD football game/tailgate that I might be going to as well. I can prob snag some tix if anyone wants to crash that. I BBQ at the games so the food alone is worth it.

Now if I just had some active members in my area that are willing to do stuff. I have never seen another dakota at the track besides the time mike (geo2slow4u) came up from ms.

sean, I'd be intrested in the dyno on saturday. I sure others would be too.

mtlcafan79

How's this for a change? From the hotel:

Race track - 15 miles.

Dyno - 7 miles.

Clipper City Brewery - 9 miles.

My house - 10 miles.

McD's - 15 miles.

On Target - 3 miles.

I tried to offer as many non-weather dependant options as possible. It gets old meeting at the hotel at Cecil all the time and standing around in the rain doing nothing. I figure this way we at least have multiple fall back plans for everything. If people are serious about the dyno, I can talk to them about a mini dyno session. For actual all day dyno days they want $875 with half paid up front. I will check with them to see what there schedule is on the 15th to see if we can squeeze in a few induviduals as realistically I don't see having anywhere near enough people to justify an entire day on the rollers.

Holy shit, a whole meet on one tank of gas! LOL

I think you're right, doubt we could fill a whole dyno day. We'll see how many folks want to dyno and go from there. It'll be nice having plenty of stuff to do within a reasonable distance.

I'm totally in. Definitely.

Indoor pistol range, eh? ;)

Just have to make sure we go to the range first and then the brewery LOL

08-27-2008, 01:52 AM
Yeah. They rent some OK stuff.

OH, I forgot there is an indoor machine gun range just up the street from my house!

http://www.selectfire.com/

They teach all kinds of tactical classes too. Check it out. I need to take my brother there anyways. He has a $100 gift cert to there I gave him last Christmas.

ChrisR/T
08-27-2008, 11:42 AM
Machine gun, eh?

Does that mean I can bring the AR-15 down?

mtlcafan79
08-27-2008, 12:31 PM
Nah, sub guns only. Thompson, MP5, Uzi, and Swedish K are available to rent.

I am going racing that day no matter what. It's only 15 min from my house. I believe Dave wanted to bring his truck out since he was gonna miss Cecil. HeavyD might bring his Durango down I think since he's local.

ChrisR/T
09-15-2008, 07:19 PM
I'm hoping to get my truck together by then. I'm waiting on word about my heads, I'm gonna call the machine shop this week to see how they're doing...

Haha..I've seen that one before when I picked up those heads from you. At least throw some Gliddens or something on that thing..lol

I'm talking about the engine and am also holding out just a bit longer for possibly getting a higher stall before I drop it into the bay. I'll know if that's gonna happen or not tomorrow else I'll be stuck with the 2400 and the cherry picker will come out to play again this Sunday.

bad360rt

Anyone want to help out this pig back together on the 9th? I have everything apart now its just a matter of putting it all back together and getting the right length pushrods ordered once I get the heads. That would give me time to get the exhaust done at a shop. Hopefully they can do a nice setup for me.

Helmet if you're running 13.99 or faster and a jacket if you're running nitrous or a blower.

Helmet if you're running 13.99 or faster and a jacket if you're running nitrous or a blower.

Well, will be my first run down a track and I have no idea what I'll run with this setup.

Without a dyno I'm gonna guess 350rwhp N/A with 4.56s, 28" DRs on RP6s, 2400 stall and dual open cutouts.

Gonna be close...err..better be at the very least.

ive never heard about the jacket requirement for nitrous or a blower setup. do you know if there strict about a blow down tube from the bottle if its in the bed?

mtlcafan79
10-30-2008, 11:26 AM
Helmets they will enforce. Jackets I haven't had them ask for yet. Blowdown tubes are only needed for in the cab.

I'd hope you'd be well into 13's. 355/370 is what my 408 made and it does mid 12's on motor.

And to clarify on the jackets, they are needed for non-OEM turbo, supercharged, or nitrous rides. If you go to a bigger turbo in your SRT-4 or upgrade the blower in your cobra you need to have a jacket by the rules. These guys for the most part will want to see a valid sticker on your helmet, battery strap, seat belts, and maybe look for a loop if you have slicks. You need to tell them if you have N2O so they will put a N after your number. If you come to the line and purge without that, they will pull you off the line to check your setup.

ChrisR/T
10-30-2008, 01:04 PM
I don't need a jacket for my stock Turbo PT, do i?

How about a loop for drag radials on the truck?

mtlcafan79
10-30-2008, 02:11 PM
No and no. They will make you run a loop for DOT slicks though. ET Skreets, etc. Got butsed on that once but they let me race anyways. They are real picky about the Snell sticker on helmets this year. That's about it though from what I've seen. Didn't look for loop when they saw the slicks or a remote cut off switch when he saw the battery box. It's empty though.

Went up to the shop that has my truck and they haven't even looked at it yet! So looks like I won't make cecil but I damn well better be ready for the 16th. The damn tranny kicks into nuetral when it shifts from 2-3 under wot. If I let off just alittle say half inch it shifts fine. It does not do it when the kick down cable is taken off. If I am in 3rd and just kick it, it does the same thing. wright to nuetral. If I roll into it she runs fine. I have ajusted the kick down all over the place and no help. So took it on tuesday to a guy that works on dodge trannys and wouldnt you know he has been sick all week. Just my friggen luck. Damn I didnt know about the jacket deal got the helmet, guess I'll get a jacket this week.

bad360rt
10-31-2008, 12:19 AM
You can get a jacket from Summit or Jegs for about $35, single layer is fine. Or, if someone needs to borrow a jacket, I'll bring mine, I won't be spraying, so I won't need it.

What do people want to do on Saturday? How early do you guys want to get here? Reason I ask is because I have a UMD football game at 3:30 on the 15th. I will be tailgating in the morning and then going to the game for atleast the first half. If people want to go with me, I have three extra tix 12th row on the 30yd line behind the UMD bench.

The other option is for me to skip the game completely and schedule something for you guys. Clipper City has a brewery tour at 1 and 2:30pm, but tickets must be ordered in advance and are $5 each.

Another option is BBQ at my house. One day this week or early next week I am expecting my new smoker to arrive from Georgia. I will of course need to break it in properly with some delicious BBQ. I would need a head count for this by mid week next week so I know how much food to cook.

The dyno I'm not really going to mess with because the one that was near the hotel/track burned down back in July. I had no clue this happened until now. There really doesn't seem to be any interest anyways.

Or everyone can meet at the hotel or my house, head off to dinner, then head out for "entertainment" for the evening. It's up to you guys. Just let me know.

Are there any cheaper hotels? 140 dollars/night for two beds is steep, esepecially when all I plan to do is sleep there to prevent having to drive 2 hours before gates on sunday morning from philly, after I drive 3 hours from PSU following my dyno apointment

BTW when is gates? Their website sucks and I can't find it.

11-07-2008, 02:40 AM
Is it just you? Right now Chris H and Jack have the the room and the couch here. There is room on the floor if you want to rough it.

Otherwise look for hotels in Hanover, MD if you want one near us or down in Bowie, MD for near the track. The problem is we are close to BWI, Baltimore, Annapolis, and DC. Nothing is cheap around here. The cheap places (can you say hourly?) I wouldn't stay in, but that's just me. Try the Red Roof in Hanover $75/night or the Econolodge in Elkridge for $62/night.

Gates should be at 11 and racing at noon on Sundays.

Here's the deal so far. Jack is coming down Saturday to the football game with me to tailgate before the game. We will be back to my house around 7 or 8. People can meet up around here for dinner at either DuClaw, or Rocky Run.

http://www.rockyrun.com/ They brew their own stuff and it's pretty good.

http://www.duclaw.com/ They have some 10% stuff coming out this week.

Rocky Run is two minutes from my house, Duclaw is ten minutes.

Late night entertainment will follow dinner. "Last dance" is 1:30am and they throw you out shortly there after. I'm sure that'll be enough time to get Chris H in trouble.

I won't be able to make it. My Grandfather has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer, so my brother and I are leaving on Friday to see him. They're giving him radiation treatments to try to slow the spread, but it's already in his kidneys, lungs and brain stem. :(

Sorry to hear that dave.

Still don't know when I'm coming down/ if I'm going. My wideband sensor took a dump, I guess it didn't like "nearly oil fouling rich" lol. My exhaust pipes look like a black hole. I'll have another sensor on wednesday and hopefully can get it tuned well enough to strap it down on saturday. The resultant three days of downtime is gonna hurt me though.

I might need help from Sean for EAE tuning before doing any time shots at the track. Mild to moderate throttle movements are fine, stomps I might as well have shut off the ignition..... I'm holding out on finishing the VE table before altering EAE from factory settings though. Sean, do you use EAE or EAE with lag comp?

mtlcafan79
11-10-2008, 04:01 PM
Just EAE. I wouldn't try adjusting EAE until your VE table is roughed out. It will depend on the entries in the upper lines of the VE table to calculate large throttle stomps. You may be already beyond my experience though. I would try to get a hold of muythaibxr on MS2extra. He might be able to offer some help with EAE in boosted setups seeing he wrote the code. I found it to be very difficult to tune, but very much worth it when you got it correct. You have to grasp the concept in your head first before you even try to tune it. See if this helps any: http://www.msextra.com/ms2extra/MS2-Extra_Tuning_Manual.html#EAE

Well low rpm high MAP stuff hasn't been tuned yet because it is not safe to do it on the street, and it only is in those areas very briefly. I hope to get all the high map areas done on the load holding dyno this saturday. Hopefully driveability will improve by getting those areas correct steady state. Do I have to disable EAE while dyno tuning?

If tuning normal AE was difficult due to map noise, I would guess the same will apply for EAE? I might look into restricting the map line somehow.

SHHHH, I don't have boost... lol.

Msextra.com will be your friend at this point. I'd be asking over there. I've never had to run any kind of mechanical filtering on my map. You turned multiply map off right?

Five9Dak
11-10-2008, 09:24 PM
I suspect rotor pulsing and cam events in my intake manifold make for some crazy map jitters.

I read msextra and msefi religiously. I'm am hesitant to post, because the mentality is that you really really need to do your homework, and even though I read for hours I feel it won't be enough, lol.

My crazy VE table issues were due to poor combustion quality on 2/alternating a switch to 4/alt fixed that and made everything run smoother. I am still using map multiply with sucess. I could try it the other way, but with no wideband and a dyno session in a few days, I don't want to jeopardize what I have. I plan to scale the whole VE table with req_fuel some more (currently highest values are on the order of 175) to give my tuner good granularity like he asked for.

With map multiply OFF I think my low MAP areas of VE would be really grainy, and small changes already make a large difference with the 65lb injectors. For example if my idle VE is 70 with multiply map on, it would be less than 30 with it on. Less than half the resolution per integer change. Also if my high load VE is near 175 at 140kpa then it would be near 245 without map multiply. If I depress the table to get more fueling for higher boost levels, my idle will suffer further. For engines with large MAP dynamic ranges and large injectors it does makes sense. And honestly my injectors are too big for my power level on gas, but I plan to switch to e85 where they will be perfect.

I do understand that a jittery map signal will be compounded double with map multiply enabled. It is my understanding that a bit of math in excel can you get you damn close to converting between the two table types. I am not averse to trying it out later after the dyno session. I just want to get a safe tune to work off of with VE analyze for now. Shit happens too fast to play much with high load cells on the street and with rich misfires resulting from my cautious tune, VE analyze is worthless.

Oh and sorry for taking a huge dump on this thread, for people who don't care to read my babble.

Welcome to the world of Megasquirt. Looks like you're having fun. Hopefully you can make it down here. We might be able to get some tuning done at the track if you can make it. EAE can be turned off and you can use TPS bassed AE for dyno passes and probably on the track too. Hopefully I can be of some help, but I won't promise anything.

Well if I go the mustang will definitely be racing, his car is reliable, lol. So you can beat up on him and people can watch. I have confidence in what me and this tuner can do, he does our formula SAE stuff. Provided I can get stomps enriched, I should be able to race.

Yeah nothing is for shure on my tranny. It might be the sct tune is some how affecting wot shifting from 2 to 3. Guess we will put 24lb injectors back in and disconect the turbo. Return it to stock tune and see if it shifts right if not we have to figure out the pressure problem. I got to race a m-4 he said he had some work done to it. We raced from 50 I eased into it and left him by about 8 cars. I let of at 110. When I say eased I mean I can go about 2 inches from wot and about 1 second later right to the floor. If I just put it right to the floor it goes out of gear----strange but we'll figure it out soon I just hope by sunday.

I got one head on now, but I have a problem with one lifter. It won't go in smoothly for some reason. The bottom goes in smooth and the top kind of gets stuck. I called rhodes but no answer. Hopefully they call me back and can overnight something. Should I worry about it? If I shove it in it goes in, but I am worried about wear. Should have the cam degreed tomorrow and be able to throw on the front cover and water pump and go ahead and put all the radiator and stuff on. That one head lifter may keep me down, booo

My dyno session sucked, I have noise on my crank signal and I have to diagnose that. Under 100kpa with low load everything was fine. Once I was in boost and under real load the rpm signal was breaking up.

The dyno operator hates MSDs on stand alone installs since they are more sensitive to EMI than oem ecus. I am going to try triggering off the pcm's coil out before it gets to the MSD. If that doesn't work I am going to take out the MSD, and it will be up for sale if it cures the problem. Also I suspect my POS taylor spiral cores aren't as well sheilded as their marketing division says.

Ask Ken about his BS3 setup. He had the same problem. Went flying magnet and never went back.

Five9Dak
11-17-2008, 02:54 AM
That's not a bad idea, I don't like the idea of stealing/piggybacking the factory crank/cam sensors, because I will have more codes and potentially no transission control inputs to the stock ecu.

I watched the video on DIYautotune from megameet08 about grounding and noise, and It's possible that my lowZ injectors are introuducing noise on flyback after longer PWM times required for higher loads. So I'm going to try that mod, as well as new battery/ground wiring and potentially a cap on the switched 12v line as well.

The dyno session was such a tease, it sounded so great below 100kpa with a proper AFR, unlike my mopar PCM which flatlines the wideband rich when I was NA.

mtlcafan79
11-17-2008, 12:39 PM
Yeah man, just a good fuel only tune on my MS setup beats the flashes. Since you can tune for other than 14.7:1 at part throttle settings you can bring in a lot more torque than you otherwise would on a stock PCM setup. Get the ignition timing figured out and I think you'll really be surprised.

On another note. If you guys ever come to Capitol, don't use Mapquest directions....
