Well I washed the cylinder wall down and im looking to build a shortblock. I plan to put my current paxton on the new setup. I want something different so I originally wanted to go with the ohio crankshaft kit with the 4.1 crank but after talking to ryan at shady dell I decided not to because of too many problmes. He said he could custom make me a kit for about the same price. I was also thinking about going with the hughes 4.18 crank but from what ive heard they do not work well with boost. After talking to ryan and he gave me a list of parts and prices for a 418 but he said he could go as big as 421 by making a 4" crank a 4.125". Well heres the part list

I have also decided to upgrade the main caps to program billets. I have very big plans for this motor but I dont have the cash flow to do it all at onece. That I why I am ONLY doing the shortblock right now. What do you guys think. Comments and criticisms are welcome.

I definitely recommend going with Ryan. Build the shit out of the shortblock, and then throw some serious boost at it :) What heads are you using? I forget :)

well it will be stock heads for now, but once i get enough $ for sct, new fuel system and and valve train ill probably go with some ported eddies. Ill have to beef the tranny up before I finish the motor.
For somereason ryan stoped responding to my emails, guess I have to keep calling him.

That's right. Once the shortblock is done, you can upgrade everything else later. Ryan's probably just waiting for you to pull the trigger ;)

well I asked for a final price with the billet caps and he never got back to me. I need to talk to him about payments since I have JUST enough to do the shortblock the way I want but I dont feel like completely breaking the bank.

I say go for it, have Ryan build a killer block. You can build the rest later on. It wont the best of the set up, but as you add parts it only get better:burnout:

I thought you said $450 for the billet main caps? I don't know of anyone who does payments. Most of the time they want some money up front and the rest when it's done. I'd save until you can swing the whole thing.

Sounds like its going to be a pretty sweet setup. You going to get him to do the 418 without using the Ohio kit?
How longs does it usually take for a shortblock to be machined, assembled, etc..? Maybe Ill look into getting him to do mine as well.

Well caps are 400 and line bore is 250 but he said there are also some other small charges. I didnt really mean "payments" just how long I have between the initial charge and final.

Yeah hes going to offset grind the crank since the ohio kit had so many problems.
I think he said its going to take about 1.5 months. Guess that answers my money question lol

Gotcha. How long it takes will depend on parts availability and how busy he is. Mine could have been done a while ago, but he's waiting on me to get a couple more parts to him.

I'm sure he can. Calling him is probably best, but it might take some time to get a hold of him, he stays pretty busy, it's just him and his brother. Last time I talked to him he was working on 7 different engines.

I have run the Pro-Gram 4 bolt billet caps for the last year now. I have the motor apart now and I'm very happy with how they performed last year.
No abnormal wear and tear on any bearing surfaces. :)
Before I got 'em the crank was walking just a tad,,, but no more.
I think you will be happy with them.

can you explain what you mean by "walking"? Ryan suggested going with the 2 bolt mains because of the lack of material.

By walking I mean the caps were moving around under stress of high HP. It caused the bearings to wear unevenly ( a lot more one side of the bearing than the other). The Pro-Gram 2 bolt mains should be good for ya if your gonna stay under around 550 engine HP.
There has been a lot of talk about the lack of area in the magnum block to install splayed 4 bolt mains. But Pro-Gram offsets their 4 bolt caps (The 2 splayed bolts are in the meat of the block). If the machinist installs them correctly,, then there is no problem. However,,, Mine came with 3 1/2" splayed bolts,,, which are too long and would have ended up in the water jacket. I switched them out for shorter bolts. If anyone needs more info on this set up,,, I can get more info tonight after work.
