So as a side project to my False Bed Floor
I decided I wanted to change up my grill.
I've been wanting to do the Cervini's Sniper Grill, which looks like this if you are not familiar, but I didn't want to spend the $350 they want for it.
https://www.cervinis.com/Files/Image/products/dakotasniper400.jpg
http://www.cervinis.com/Files/Image/products/9000dakota(450).jpg
Well I went to Certifit and spent less then $20 with tax to get this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/xloud9t5gmcsuvx/Dakota/ProjectSniperGrill/IMG00349.jpg
I then went to take some side cutters to the inner small grill area.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/xloud9t5gmcsuvx/Dakota/ProjectSniperGrill/IMG00350.jpg
Then used a Cut off to take off the horizontal bar. Still need to get in closer on the big bars. I then used the side cutters to clean up where I cut the little bars off.

That's all for now. Sunday I will be working on my bed more, and may start sanding and fiberglassing. My buddy Andy will be doing his too, different then mine, but he's gonna teach me how to fiberglass. Don't have any experience with it first hand.

Are you going to cut out the raised areas of the center bar as well?
xlofnktax

Yeah, I am going to build up fiberglass over that.

I bought a grill to try and mod into something like a 'cuda grill.
If you have the center pieces you cut out, I'd be interestd in them if you're just gonna trash em.

uh, it has a nice place to hang in the garage? haha... i'm starting back up on it now that it's winter and I have nothing to do, just finishing body work on shaved doors and fog lights first.

i did this about 6 months ago. drimel out the parts of the grill you dont want then sand areas. go to local auto parts store and get abs plastic comes in a little tube and it heats in you hand when you appling. do that to all four wholes then file and sand also notice there is a lip that goes along the whole inside of the grille shell. you can remove it all around or make in on the four whole you recovered.

got the basic shape glued down and added some resin on it.. gonna let it harden, fill in the back, and then shave down to smooth everything.. first time fiberglassing so any constructive critism would be great, but dont be a dick haha.. im new to this.

so with the advice of other people I tore all the fleece off....
it came right off because I didnt sand/grind it down at all.. I am going to do either t shirt material, or spandex like other people have recommended, because I can grind it down where the felt will be so it doesnt stick off of the grill as high as it did before... it's all a learning experience haha..

Let's try this again...
Had a buddy come over and help me do it.. looks like it's actually going some where...
Sorry for bad pics.

So got out the grinder, cut off wheel, and da, and got to work this am to get it prepped for more fiberglassing 2night after work...
Started by grinding off access matt. The I cut out the old grill under new grills shell. Then took out as much foil I could, and started sanding it a little.

my buddy andy came over and we started to hook up his solenoids to find out he was missing a harness from his alarm which had his extra channels.. so after we bolted up the driver bracket, we started shaping the grill a little more... no pics though..

Not much of an update, but experimented with bondo hair to help get the shape... about 3 weeks ago, just finally took pics... doing more work 2morro if i get around to it. Also decided I am just going to smooth the inner bar, rather then make the bottom and top curve like the sniper grill.

i have been working on making one similar to yours.. just found this thread saved me some time thanks! never would of found it if you didnt update!
did you use fiberglass?? after reading the weather thing about winter i have questions! i live in chicago and anyone not familiar with the weather here my bithday is in feb.. last year it was 60 and sunny the next day it was snowing and -2 thats typical chicago winter ha
xlofnktax how did it hold up during the winter?
dakotaballin313
04-15-2010, 02:13 AM
I had no problems with the grill in the winter I used abs puddy from local auto parts store and drimeled the cross bar out and hand molded the puddy. After drying I sanded and primered then paint the hardest thing was there Is a lip in the grill shell that goes around the inside. Shaping this to abs spots was a pain.

if you got time maybe i could get a picture of how you did it on the inside?? no rush i mean its not like i can do it all today anyways ha its just been sititng for a few days with the bars all cut out while i planed my attack on it
if not no its cool also it wont be the end of the world.... i hate asking things like this cuz i dont know how to point out that i really wont mind and i usually come off sounding like a jerk.. haha but really i wont mind if you cant/dont want to

So how much have you guys spent on these projects? I'm guessing the ABS from the autoparts store would be cheaper and easier than the fiberglass? Also how much for inserts?

its from a 79 trans am it could be functional but you have to change the air filter mounting surface on the scoop bc the 5.9 isnt center with the hood, it could be done i sold the truck to a buddy before i finished it
