View Full Version : Header Gasket Preference

I have JM long tubes and one of the leaks seems to be coming from the flanges. I am wanting to move to a thicker header gasket to see if it helps at all. Looking for what is the prefered header gasket. :idunno:

I have a set of Reflex gaskets but have not used them yet.. have heard good things about them.

Remflex is the Shizz....I'd definitely recommend them.

Reflex has been working for me for the header flange. For the collector- not so much. :-/

I'm using Remflex port plate and header gaskets...no leaky.

Right now I'm using copper collector gaskets but planning on Remflex for the engine swap. They're not working for you?

No I blew out a remflex collector gasket in like 1000 miles. It's not on my wideband side, so I didn't bother fixing it.

I've never had a problem with the gaskets PPH supplies. They are fairly thick and seal good. I've blown out Felpro collector gaskets, but never had a leak using the PPH ones, and even re-used the header gaskets more than once with no leaks.

What are these Remflex gaskets being talked about?

I run Thorley Tri-Y headers and I need a good gasket recommendation for these as well. Any thoughts?

The Thorley headers are the same as the PPH headers. Should be able to get new gaskets from PPH for them.

Do you know of any others?

I don't like the ones they came with. There is not much compression to them and they just leak. Unless the PPH ones are different from what Thorley supplied?

I'm not sure. With the ones I get from PPH(unless they have changed since the last time I bought them) they are fairly thick and hard. And you have to continually re-check the torque the first couple weeks about every other day, then about once a week for the next month, but after that the gaskets have "seated" and won't leak, and like I said, I've even re-used them a few times with no problems. You also need to "trim" the ports on the gaskets to match the headers otherwise there is some overlap into the port and decreased flow as the gaskets are "matched" to the factory head ports. The Remflex ones are supposed to be good, but I have no experience with them.

They seem pretty popular, please send me the part number and your price via PM.

To me; a header gasket should never blow out on a naturally aspirated engine. There must be other reasons for it. Loose bolts, bad fitment, etc. I have never blown out an exhaust gasket, in all 14 yrs of owning the truck.

Ever used the cheap Mr Gasket collector gaskets that crumble after a few heat cycles? You try re-torqueing the bolts to "seal" the gasket and it falls apart.

That's the brand I have always used. I put Hi Tack spray on both sides, then torque the shit out of em to start with. I've never had one come loose, or blow out.

No port plates here, Didn't think they offered them with my headers. Maybe my problem?

I'm using, and have re-used, cometics. never had an issue. quality hardware seems to make the biggest difference.

Been using Cometics between the port plates and headers. Problem I've had is between the plates and the heads. Been using Permatex High Temp Black Silicone, that only lasts for about 5-6 months. Done proper re-torquing to no avail. I have a set of Remflex that I will try next - and stay with the Cometics between the plates and headers.

With my old Mopar headers, I ran all Mr. Gasket Pro series (the black ones).

With the Spintechs, I use Hi Temp silicone for the port plate-to-head, then a Cometic from the port plate-to-header. Still use the Mr Gasket on the collector though. I also use Hi Tack on all of the gaskets.

As for port plates, if your headers bolt onto the heads OK, that's all that matters. The port plates are for the headers that have oversized primaries. There's no room left for a bolt, so the port plates essentially act as an adapter plate.

Thanks for the TOTY well wishes! I don't see me winning, but it's nice to even be considered. I believe Andrew will win and rightfully so. Hell, he's way in the lead right now and he has yet to post a single pic!

Thinking about spraying the three peice down tubes with that stuff used in the commercial where they spray the screen door on the bottom of the boat. That'll fix it....:jester: Plus the tubes will ever rust.

The white MR gasket collector gaskets crumble. The black ones are better, but no where near the same quality as the ones PPH sells. I actually have some of the deadsoft aluminum collector gaskets on the truck now. Figured being re-usable is a good thing since I am getting a Spintech dual exhaust put on with test pipes or cats that can be swapped in/out.

I just run stainless steel bolts(allen head) that I get from the dorman box @ napa. I don't re-use them, and I always use anti-sieze and a small star washer under each bolt. torque 'em down the 1st time, and I've rarely had to re-tighten them. No matter how many heat cycles they go through.

FWIW, I redid my header and port plate gaskets back last May after overtorquing the port plates back in '08 when I first installed them. That first setup eventually developed header leaks again because of that...but since I redid them with new port plates and proper torque specs, they've been working like a champ. This is using Remflex gaskets between the port plates and heads, and between the plates and headers. As for collector gaskets, never had an issue with them blowing out. The gaskets on my collectors are the ones I initially installed back in '08, and the ones I removed when I put the cats back in were fine...as are the ones that replaced them.

As for the JM headers the OP posted about...they don't use port plates, so just get the Remflex gaskets for the standard Mopar Magnum exhaust flange.

I am using remflex for everything. The spintech and collectors. I do have a leak but I bought the once piece plates. So hopefully that works, but would you recommend using permatex sealent? Thanks
