View Full Version : Drag wheels/tires?

I am back to square one for drag wheels & tires. I had a set of 17" R/T wheels with 325/45-17 M&H drag radials, but they just didn't stick very well at the track. LVMS's track prep is usually relatively poor, and my truck has a lot of bottom end - 408ci/4.56's/nitrous.

I was originally hoping to find a combo I could leave on the truck full-time so I wouldn't have to go through the hassles of swapping at the track - a set of used 17x12 Viper racing wheels plus the 390/40-17 M&H drag radials. At this point I dunno if I want to go that route just because of the expense - the rears would be ~$900 by themselves, plus I'd have to find some fronts to match.

I want to hear what the other 11-sec/low 12-sec guys are running on their trucks, and how well they're sticking for you. I'd rather buy just one set that will give great traction and not have to worry about buying anything else later on.

Edit: I should add that I'm not just looking for street combos. I think that I'm probably going to end up with a drag-only setup because it will probably stick better and also be cheaper.

Hoosier drag slicks 28x10x15s is what I run . Went 11.97@111 and broke the LSD. So a locker, driveshaft loop, and spicer joints would be a great idea I think. If you dont already have them that is.

I'd say bump Alan if this was Delphi... I always thought his cheap rim combo along with skinnies, and the 9" Hoosiers out back always did very well. Can't argue with success.

broke the LSD.
My stock LSD broke on my '99, and I wasn't making that much power at the time. I think it's just a shitty stock LSD more than too much power.

Steve,

I run Hoosier Quick Time Pro's 29 x 13.5 x 15 on Bogart 15 x 10 rims...
They stick like glue.:)

Yes Sir , that would be me. And you might be ?
In the 11s and no site of a decent tune. So who has a spare locker laying around? Oh yea and a windshield ,both went on the launch .Some people said the front end left the ground but hard to believe on a 1.91 sixty foot. there is a video of it but the guy who shot it , did it in a format not compatable with my video camara, it played back in fast forward. So i couldnt tell much about it.

Dunno about that. But it has took alot abuse . I think I'm making some real nice HP on my combination. Considering I'm still on a stock bottom end with .020 over pistons, a baby .506 lift cam, 4 barrel M1, stage III R/T heads , 24 lb injectors , 58mm tb , 150 shot ,and gsm headers and exhuast. 3500 viper stall , power demon pro comp tranny , lots of suspenion work ,and 4.56s out back.

I've cut 1.64's on my M&H 325's, but that was at Atco with good prep. I cut mid 1.7's with them at my local 1/8th mile with crappy prep, and I had to roll into it off the line tho, couldn't just mash the pedal.

If you want to run the 390 M&H's, why not just get a pair of R/T wheels widened to 11"? They fit and will hold the 390's.

Last time at cecil I ran my dad's 28X14.50X15 Hoosier QTP's on 15X10
Bogarts, with Moroso DS2 fronts on Bogart 15 inch skinnies, Truck went 12.2@110 on a 1.65 60ft at cecil on about a 20 degree night. A couple people at the track said it would "wave" the left front tire before porpoising VERY bad. Suspension is hotchkis TVS with Bilsteins ( :jerkit: ),no front sway bar and modified spring clamps in the rear. The motor is stock cam, heads, short block, with a K&N FIPK, M1 2BBL, 52 mm holley, Harlan Sharp 1.7 adjustables, PPH headers with no cat and MBRP rear section, Mopar PCM, built trans with 2600 stall, 4.56's, 3923's, and a 150 shot.

Hope that helps

Iv considered doing that when I get my setup all done. :rockwoot:

Gotta look into how much it is to widen them and shizzle though.

Keep an eye on E-Bay... There was a set of 17"x12" Purner racing wheels posted a few weeks ago, guy only wanted $340 for the pair. I wanted to buy them to mount some of the 390's, but I didn't have the cash on hand.

I really want to mount them on R/T wheels, keep it looking like Im rolling on street tires the best I can..although they'll be mighty wide. :jester:

I remember seeing a link somewhere for a place that widens/narrows wheels. Anybody know where Im talking about?

I've heard that M&H sizes their stuff big...so the 325 is more like a 275. What would the 390 be more close to?

Last time I checked (it's been a while) they were getting $150 each to widen wheels to 11", and no donor wheels required, just the two wheels you want to get widened. I think someone said they're getting $170/wheel now.

Not sure exactly what the 390's would really equate to, but they fit on an 11" rim and fit on the truck without any modifications. I'm gonna see how my 325's do with the new setup, but I have a feeling I might be stepping up to the 390's. Here they are on someone else's truck (I forget who tho):

Sorry to thread jack.
Dave,
I just never thought I would cut those 60s let alone even begin to lift a tire with my combo. However, I will be doing Qa-1s this season! Hoping to have my new set-up done too, with some boost. Right now I need to get the cosmetic damage fixed.

1.6's are fun, huh? Nothing like getting your head knocked back on a good launch. :woot:

Some companies do the donor wheel deal, but weldcraft doesn't. I wish I could remember who posted those pics originally, but he said the pic makes it look a lil closer than it is, said it has enough room.

Can't wait to get back to them, gonna miss the instant hit from the spray though! Just can't chance it again, I'm more confident with boost, so I'm gonna try that route.
