Back to the subject:

Removed the rear clamp on the leafs

Deleted the front sway bar

adjusted the caltracs

Screwed the tires to the rims (tubes oredered)

Does removing the rear sway bar make that big of difference? With the caltracs, should the rear drop or stand up?

At launch...Mine drops. When I get on the converter it just sits there.

Not apples to apples but I've kept my rear on even with the 1"blocks. Figure it'll fight rotation the slightest bit and maybe help plant the tires more evenly. I put moog poly bushings where the bar attaches to the axle. Doesn't weigh that much. I think the ES poly leaf spring bushings have helped being more evident on the street tires with an old best of 1.97 60 consistently.

I dont know wtf happened to the sound. This is before I removed the front sway, and rear clamps on the leafs.

At launch the Caltracs should drive the tires into the ground. Truck should stay level.

Learn to shift while you're at it!

wIFMaj8wSvo

FF to 1:15 if you just want to see the launch.

What was the final setup out back?

huskerrt79

Removed front sway bar.

Removed the rear clamps on the leaf springs

Adjusted caltracs

Tubes in rear tires with tire and rim screwed together.

I gave the track guys shit on local forum so they would prep the track.

I still need to get the QA1s, and adjust the caltracs some more.

Did you clamp the front of the springs? I have a set of clamps I can send someone if they want them.

Not move them, buy or make new ones for the front.

No, not like the stock ones. Basically two straps of metal two bolts go through and tighten them up around the pack. Google mr gasket leaf spring clamps.

so no clamp at all in the back? and one or 2 in the front?

grapejuice1998

Remove all clamps on the rear of the leaf springs.

I wouldn't use extras on the front, unless it was just a bare spring (no Caltrac). I would if it was just a slapper bar though.

The result is known as "dynamic lift", because the springs fan out during the launch, which lifts the rear of the vehicle and at the same time, plants the tires harder against the pavement.

You don't want to use leaf spring clamps if you already run Caltracs (or equivelent).

The clamps are (in place of) Caltracs.

grapejuice1998
12-18-2011, 08:53 PM
The reason you would clamp the fronts at all is to make them rigid, which would prevent them from wrapping under the torque of launch. If a spring wraps, it will load and unload until you get solid traction (wheel hop), which then breaks shit in the drive train.
If you have a Caltrac, or a Slide a Link, then the front part of the spring is prevented from wrapping. No need to clamp it.

I have my Hotchkis leafs un-clamped. It doesn't affect the handling, but it will definitely help you plant your rear tires harder.
If you end up not liking it for some reason, you can always re-clamp them.

We used somethin similar to that except our traction spring mounted on top of the front half of the leafs. With that setup on hotchkis springs and circle track slicks i cut 1.7's all day long on my old motor. Those springs were then moved to my buddy's rt (stock springs, stock shocks, no sways) and he was cutting low 1.6's with 9" drag slicks, plus he even snagged a couple high 1.5 launches. Gotta love a bottle launch

Very intresting thread.
So I'm running stock leafs with caltracs and qa1s... So if I understand well, you guys say I should unclamp the leafs in the back only and not the front? Or should I unclamp the front part too?

I know this is a old thread being brought back but I know it's missing info. Who on here talking about loosening up the front control arms or something along those lines? I am in the front end right now on mine, and wondering how easy I should have the upper control arms. Right now they drop under their own weigh with a slight resistance. This is with no spring btw..

Loose is good. Especially the rear....

EIDT: Just to clear things up...I'm taking about suspension here. You want the rear end to move freely as well, no binding.

This is with no spring btw..Old racers trick. When I rebuilt my front end, the control arm slowly came down under it's own weight (with the ES supplied lube of course) when I had it tightened where I wanted it.

Too tight and they would just sit there. Might be why I had little to no squeaking on the bushings, not sure. I'd keep them clean and lube once a year after the ES lube was gone. I've used PB Blaster, WD after washing and let it sit and penetrate. Just a little maintenance experience that worked for me to anyone reading:biggthumpup:
